Biography
Emilianos Lazaridis was a Greek Orthodox hierarch of the late Ottoman period who served as Metropolitan of Grevena and is remembered in Greek ecclesiastical tradition as a hieromartyr of the Macedonian Struggle. He was born in 1877 in the village of Prodromos in the region of Iconium (Konya) in Cappadocia, Asia Minor, then part of the Ottoman Empire. The Greek Orthodox communities of Cappadocia and Lycaonia still formed a substantial population in the late nineteenth century, and young men destined for the clergy commonly sought education under the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople. Lazaridis received theological training in that milieu and entered the ranks of the patriarchal clergy as a celibate, in keeping with the Eastern Orthodox requirement that bishops be drawn from the monastic or otherwise unmarried clergy.
In 1908 he was elected and consecrated Metropolitan of Grevena, a mountainous diocese in western Macedonia within the Ottoman vilayet of Monastir. Grevena and its villages lay in a zone of acute national and ecclesiastical contest during the Macedonian Struggle, when Greek Patriarchist, Bulgarian Exarchist, and other armed and cultural organizations competed for the allegiance of Orthodox Christians, while Ottoman authorities viewed Greek hierarchs with suspicion as agents of irredentism. As metropolitan, Emilianos worked to sustain Greek schools, churches, and communal institutions under the jurisdiction of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, activity that placed him in personal danger.
On 1 October 1911, while traveling in the exercise of his pastoral office in the Grevena district, he was killed. Contemporary and later Greek historical and church sources describe the killing as an assassination by Ottoman gendarmes or soldiers. His death came only a year before the First Balkan War, in the course of which Greek forces occupied Grevena in 1912. He is counted among the Orthodox clergy who lost their lives in the violent closing years of Ottoman rule in Macedonia.
The Greek Orthodox Church commemorates Emilianos Lazaridis as a hieromartyr, with his memory especially associated with the Metropolis of Grevena and with remembrances of the new martyrs of the Macedonian Struggle. Formal details of an Orthodox glorification process, the precise site of the ambush, and the place of burial are not uniformly recorded in widely accessible historical literature; what can be stated with confidence is his origin in Cappadocian Prodromos, his brief tenure as metropolitan from 1908, and his violent death in 1911 in the Grevena region while serving the Patriarchate under Ottoman administration.
