Biography

Short Description

Émilien of Valence, whose name corresponds to the Latin Aemilianus, is an obscure figure in Christian hagiography linked by designation to Valence in the Rhône valley of southeastern Gaul, in what is now the department of Drôme in France. Unlike better-documented saints of the same name—such as Emilian of Cogolla in the Rioja, Emilian of Nantes, or various Italian confessors called Aemilianus—this Émilien does not appear with a securely reconstructible life in the principal medieval martyrologies, in Gregory of Tours, or in the standard modern critical collections of Gallic saints. No contemporary inscription, conciliar signature, or independently datable liturgical notice has been verified that would fix his century, office, or manner of death.

The ancient bishopric of Valence is historically real and produced several venerated figures, above all Saint Apollinaris (Apollinaire) in the early sixth century, brother of Avitus of Vienne. Early episcopal catalogues for the see are partly legendary, and later compilers sometimes inserted names that cannot be confirmed from acts of councils such as Epaone or from other fifth- and sixth-century sources. It is therefore possible that a local cult of an Émilien existed in the Valentinois, whether as bishop, priest, martyr, or confessor, but the evidence does not allow that cult to be identified with a particular historical person or dated even to a given century.

The personal name Aemilianus was common in the Roman and post-Roman West, derived from the gens Aemilia, and French hagiography contains several distinct Émiliens and Émilions whose cults were sometimes transferred or conflated in later popular devotion. In the absence of a feast consistently attested for this Valence figure in the Roman Martyrology or in well-documented diocesan calendars, and without a known burial church, translation of relics, or patronage that can be traced in reliable sources, almost every biographical particular remains unknown. No year of birth or death, place of origin, family, spouse, religious order, or papal or patriarchal office can be established.

A careful historian must therefore record the association of the name with Valence and the severe limits of the evidence, rather than supply a conjectural vita. Claims that would assign this Émilien a specific reign of persecution, a role as bishop of Valence, or a precise feast day would go beyond what can be verified. The figure stands as an example of the many poorly attested local names that survive in later saint-lists of the Rhône valley without a surviving ancient passion or life.
