Biography

Short Description

Émilienne de Rome, known in Latin as Aemiliana (also Emiliana) of Rome, was a sixth-century Roman Christian virgin whose life is known almost exclusively from the writings of her nephew, Pope Gregory I (Gregory the Great). She belonged to a senatorial family of Rome. With her sisters Tarsilla (also Trasilla or Tharsilla) and Gordiana she was a paternal aunt of Gregory; their brother Gordianus was Gregory’s father. The family counted among its ancestors Pope Felix III, whom Gregory later named in connection with a vision granted to Tarsilla. The sisters lived in the family household in Rome and embraced consecrated virginity rather than marriage, a well-attested choice among aristocratic Christian women of late antiquity who pursued asceticism without entering a named monastic order.

Gregory recounts their manner of life in his Homilies on the Gospels. Tarsilla and Emiliana persevered in prayer, fasting, and mortification in the paternal home, while Gordiana later abandoned that way of life and married. Gregory presents Tarsilla as especially given to long hours of kneeling; after her death her knees were found calloused from prayer. Shortly before she died she was said to have seen their ancestor Pope Felix, who showed her a shining dwelling and invited her into it. Those present perceived a fragrance at her passing. A few days later Tarsilla appeared to Emiliana and summoned her, saying that she had kept the Lord’s Nativity without her sister and that Emiliana would keep the Epiphany with her. Emiliana then fell ill and died, according to this account, around the time of Epiphany.

Almost nothing else about Emiliana can be verified from independent contemporary sources. No document outside Gregory’s homiletic narrative records her year of birth, a precise year of death, or the ordinary details of her daily life. She lived during a violent period in Italian history—the later Ostrogothic kingdom and the Gothic Wars—but the surviving notices do not connect her personally to those events. She is not associated with a formal religious order; her vocation was that of a consecrated virgin in a domestic setting, a pattern common among Roman aristocratic women of the fifth and sixth centuries. Later tradition sometimes links the family with the Caelian Hill, where Gregory afterward turned his ancestral house into a monastery, but Emiliana’s exact burial place is not securely documented in early sources.

The Roman Martyrology commemorates her on 5 January as a virgin and aunt of Pope Gregory who departed to God at the invitation of her sister Tarsilla (herself commemorated on 24 December). Her cult remained modest and local. She is not widely recorded as patron of particular places, professions, illnesses, or groups, and she was venerated by ancient popular cult rather than by a later formal process of beatification or canonization. The historical portrait therefore rests on a single family witness writing a generation or so after the events he describes, and it must be treated with corresponding caution.
