Biography

Short Description

Emma of Bremen, known in German as Emma von Lesum and sometimes called Hemma or Imma, was a Saxon countess of the early eleventh century whose life is known through a combination of charter evidence, genealogical reconstruction, and later local hagiographical tradition. She was born into the Immedinger family, a powerful Saxon noble house, in the late tenth century; her exact place and date of birth are not recorded in surviving sources. Her brother Meinwerk became Bishop of Paderborn in 1009 and was a prominent figure at the courts of the Ottonian and early Salian emperors, noted for his building projects and ecclesiastical reforms. Through this kinship Emma stood at the intersection of the highest secular and ecclesiastical elites of Saxony.

She was married to Liudger, a son of Hermann Billung, Duke of Saxony, thereby allying the Immedingers with the Billung ducal dynasty. Liudger, who held the rank of count, died in 1011. The marriage produced at least one son, Imad, who decades later occupied the see of Paderborn as bishop from 1051 to 1076. After she was widowed, Emma resided on her extensive allodial estates at Lesum, a locality on the river Lesum to the north of Bremen that now forms part of the city of Bremen. There she adopted a life of notable piety and charity, using her considerable wealth to support the Church and the needy.

Emma is particularly remembered as a benefactress of the cathedral church of Bremen. Surviving notices and later tradition indicate that she made substantial donations of land and income to the archiepiscopal church, contributing to its endowment in a period when the archbishops of Bremen-Hamburg were consolidating their position in northern Germany and on the Scandinavian missions. She died at Lesum on 3 December 1038 and was interred in Bremen Cathedral. A popular cult developed around her tomb. According to a well-known later legend, when her grave was opened her body was found to have decayed except for her feet, a circumstance interpreted as miraculous testimony to the many journeys she had made on foot to attend Mass and the Divine Office.

Emma was never formally canonized by the papacy; her veneration remained a local cult centered on Bremen and Lesum, typical of many noble saints of the Ottonian and Salian eras whose reputations for holiness grew from their patronage of the Church and their reputations for personal austerity and almsgiving. Her feast has traditionally been observed on 3 December. Historical sources for her biography are relatively sparse, and much of the colorful detail attached to her name belongs to later legend rather than to contemporary record. Nonetheless, the outline of her family connections, widowhood, benefactions, and burial is sufficiently attested to place her among the pious aristocratic widows who played an important role in the religious life of eleventh-century Saxony.
