Biography

Short Description

Enrichetta Beltrame Quattrocchi was born in Rome on 6 April 1914, the youngest of the four children of Luigi Beltrame Quattrocchi (1880–1951) and Maria Corsini (1884–1965). Her parents, a Sicilian-born lawyer and a Florentine educator and writer who had married in Rome in 1905, would in 2001 become the first married couple beatified together by the Catholic Church. Enrichetta’s birth itself formed a well-attested episode in the family’s later hagiography: during the pregnancy physicians warned that continuing it endangered the mother’s life and advised a therapeutic abortion; Maria and Luigi refused. After a long period of rest, both mother and child survived. Enrichetta’s siblings were Filippo (born 1906; later the diocesan priest Don Tarcisio), Stefania (born 1908; later the Benedictine Sister Maria Cecilia), and Cesare (born 1909; later the Trappist Father Paolino). The household in which she grew up in early twentieth-century Rome was marked by daily Mass, family prayer, and active lay apostolate rather than by public notoriety.

Unlike her three older siblings, all of whom entered consecrated or clerical life, Enrichetta remained in the lay state. She did not marry and had no children. Contemporary accounts and later biographical notices present this not as a default but as a chosen vocation: she stayed with her parents, assisted them in illness and old age, and lived a discreet consecrated life in the world. She received a solid education, consistent with a professional Roman Catholic family of the period, and took part in ordinary ecclesial and charitable activity in the city. After Luigi’s death in 1951 she continued to care for Maria until the latter’s death in 1965. She then went on living in Rome as a single laywoman dedicated to prayer, to the memory of her parents, and to quiet service. She was not a member of a religious institute.

Enrichetta became an important living witness in the cause that led to her parents’ beatification. She gave testimony, helped preserve family papers and recollections, and embodied for investigators the ordinary holiness the cause sought to document. On 21 October 2001 she was present in Saint Peter’s Square when Pope John Paul II beatified Luigi and Maria, together with her brothers Filippo and Cesare (Stefania had died in 1993). The event was historically unusual: a married couple raised to the honours of the altar as a pair, with three of their four children still living and one of them a priest, one a monk, and one a consecrated laywoman. In the years that followed she remained a point of reference for those interested in the spirituality of Christian marriage and of the lay vocation.

She died in Rome on 16 June 2012, at the age of ninety-eight, the last survivor of the four siblings. She was never beatified or canonized, and no feast day or patronage has been assigned to her by the Church. After her death a reputation for holiness attached to her own life as well as to that of her parents; a cause for her beatification was subsequently taken up in the Diocese of Rome, and she is commemorated in Catholic reference works as a Servant of God. Historically she is significant less as a public founder or martyr than as the lay member of a single Roman family in which both parents and all four children were, in different states of life, dedicated to God—an ensemble that twentieth- and twenty-first-century Catholic teaching on the universal call to holiness has often cited.
