Biography

Short Description

Enrique Ángel Angelelli Carletti was born on 17 July 1923 in Córdoba, Argentina, the son of Italian immigrants. He entered the seminary of Córdoba and later studied in Rome at the Pontifical Gregorian University. He was ordained a priest in Rome on 9 October 1949. Returning to the Archdiocese of Córdoba, he became known for pastoral work among factory workers, young people, and the urban poor, and for his involvement with Catholic Action. His ministry already showed the social emphasis that would mark his later episcopate.

Pope John XXIII appointed him auxiliary bishop of Córdoba in December 1960; he was consecrated in March 1961. Angelelli took part in all four sessions of the Second Vatican Council and identified with the Council’s call for a Church close to the poor. In July 1968 Pope Paul VI named him bishop of the rural diocese of La Rioja in northwestern Argentina. There he sought to put conciliar teaching into practice: he supported rural laborers and landless peasants, encouraged cooperatives and the rural branch of Catholic Action, and publicly challenged local landowning elites. His pastoral letters and stands on wages, land, and human dignity brought him into lasting conflict with powerful economic interests in the province.

After the military coup of 24 March 1976, repression in La Rioja intensified. Two priests of his diocese, Carlos de Dios Murias and Gabriel Longueville, were abducted and murdered in mid-July 1976; the lay catechist Wenceslao Pedernera was killed shortly afterward. Angelelli denounced the crimes and went to El Chamical to gather testimony and to celebrate a memorial Mass. On 4 August 1976, while driving back toward La Rioja with Father Arturo Pinto, their vehicle was forced off the road near Punta de los Llanos. Angelelli was killed. The dictatorship presented the crash as an accident; later investigation established that he had been assassinated by agents of the regime because of his defense of the poor and his opposition to state terror.

His remains were buried in the cathedral of La Rioja. For years official accounts treated the death as accidental, but Argentine courts eventually convicted former military officers of his murder. Pope Francis, who had known Angelelli’s reputation and as a bishop in Argentina had supported remembrance of the murdered churchmen of La Rioja, recognized him as a martyr killed in hatred of the faith. Angelelli was beatified on 27 April 2019 in La Rioja together with Murias, Longueville, and Pedernera.
