Biography

Short Description

Enrique García Beltrán was a Catholic seminarian of the Archdiocese of Valencia martyred during the religious persecution that accompanied the Spanish Civil War. He was born on 10 March 1913 in the small town of Millena in the province of Alicante, in eastern Spain. Surviving records of his family background, childhood, and personal character are extremely sparse, as is typical for many of the lesser-known victims of 1936. He entered the diocesan seminary in Valencia to study for the priesthood at a time when the Spanish Church still occupied a prominent place in national life yet already faced mounting legislative and social hostility from republican, socialist, and anarchist currents.

The Second Spanish Republic, proclaimed in 1931, enacted a succession of anticlerical laws that dissolved the Society of Jesus, curtailed religious education, and seized Church property. After the military rising of 17–18 July 1936, revolutionary committees and militias in the Republican zone unleashed a campaign of violence against clergy, religious, and Catholic laity. In Catalonia, Aragon, and the Valencian region especially, thousands of priests, nuns, and seminarians were killed in the opening months of the war, frequently without any form of trial. García Beltrán was among those seized in the summer of 1936.

On 16 August 1936 he was taken to the cemetery of Silla, a town south of Valencia, and executed by firing squad. He was twenty-three years old. Contemporary notices of the Valencia martyrs indicate that many seminarians and young clerics met death reciting prayers or offering forgiveness, yet no reliably attested last words of García Beltrán himself have been preserved in widely accessible sources. He died in odium fidei, that is, out of hatred for the Catholic faith, a judgment later confirmed in the beatification process.

His name was included in the collective cause of 233 martyrs associated with the Archdiocese of Valencia and its surrounding territory. After the required diocesan investigation and Roman scrutiny of evidence that they had been killed for their faith, Pope John Paul II beatified the group on 11 March 2001 in Saint Peter's Square. García Beltrán has not been canonized. The liturgical memorial of this large group is kept on 22 September.

Devotion to Blessed Enrique García Beltrán remains essentially local, concentrated in the Valencian Community and among those who commemorate the twentieth-century martyrs of Spain. His brief life and death illustrate the fate of numerous ordinary candidates for the priesthood whose formation was cut short by the revolutionary violence of 1936. The successive beatifications of Spanish Civil War martyrs, numbering several thousand in total, constitute one of the largest collective recognitions of martyrdom in modern Catholic history.
