Biography

Short Description

Enrique Ernesto Shaw was an Argentine Catholic layman, naval officer, and businessman whose life became a prominent twentieth-century example of holiness in family and professional work. He was born in Paris on 26 February 1921 to Argentine parents, Alejandro Shaw and Sara Tornquist, and was taken to Argentina in childhood. Raised in a Catholic household of substantial means, he received a rigorous education and entered the Argentine Naval Military School, later serving as an officer in the Navy. After leaving active naval service he entered industry and rose to senior executive responsibility at Cristalería Rigolleau, a major glass-manufacturing firm. He sought throughout his career to apply the social teaching of the Catholic Church—especially the papal encyclical tradition on labor, property, and the common good—to the concrete conditions of Argentine industrial life.

Shaw married Cecilia Bunge, of a well-known Argentine family, and they had nine children. He treated marriage and fatherhood as a primary vocation and tried to hold together domestic duties, business leadership, and apostolic work. In 1952 he founded the Asociación Cristiana de Dirigentes de Empresa (ACDE), the Christian Association of Business Executives, drawing on European Catholic employers’ initiatives and on Catholic Action. Through ACDE and through his own management he promoted the dignity of labor, just remuneration, profit-sharing, and the idea that a firm should be a community of persons rather than a mere instrument of capital. He was remembered for personal contact with workers and concern for their families at a time of social and political tension in Argentina.

He was not a member of a religious order. His spirituality was that of a committed layman: frequent participation in the sacraments, formation by Catholic social doctrine, and the conviction that entrepreneurial authority was a field of Christian witness. In his final years he suffered from cancer. Biographical accounts of his last illness record that he continued to work and to encourage the association he had founded, and that many employees offered blood for transfusions. He died in Buenos Aires on 27 August 1962, at the age of forty-one.

The Archdiocese of Buenos Aires later opened his cause of canonization, presenting him as a model of lay holiness in ordinary professional and family life. Pope Francis declared him Venerable on 24 April 2021, recognizing that he had practiced the Christian virtues to a heroic degree. He has not been beatified or canonized, and no official feast day or patronage has been assigned. His historical reputation rests on the attempt to unite business responsibility with the Gospel and with the Church’s teaching on the rights and dignity of workers.
