Biography

Short Description

Éon d'Arles, known in Latin sources as Aeonius or Eonius, was bishop of Arles in southern Gaul at the end of the fifth century and the opening of the sixth. Almost nothing can be established about his birth, family origins, or early career. He is attested principally as the metropolitan who occupied the see of Arles immediately before Caesarius of Arles, and as a kinsman of that far better-documented successor. The chief narrative source is the Vita Caesarii Arelatensis, composed in the mid-sixth century by clerics who had known Caesarius, together with the traditional episcopal lists of the church of Arles. No independent letters, sermons, or legislative acts securely attributed to Aeonius himself have been preserved.

The church of Arles in this period was one of the leading sees of Gaul. It claimed an ancient foundation associated with Trophimus and, in the fifth century, had obtained from the papacy a vicariate that gave its bishop a privileged role among the Gallic churches, although that claim was contested by other metropolitans. Aeonius’s tenure coincided with the last phase of Visigothic rule in Provence, before the Frankish victory at Vouillé and the subsequent contests over the region. In such cities episcopal office carried civic as well as ecclesiastical weight, but the surviving evidence does not attribute to Aeonius a large body of conciliar presidency or royal correspondence comparable to that of Caesarius after him.

According to the Vita Caesarii, Aeonius was related to Caesarius, who belonged to a Gallo-Roman family from the region of Chalon-sur-Saône. Caesarius had entered the island monastery of Lérins. Aeonius summoned him from Lérins to Arles, ordained him deacon and then priest, and looked to him as intended successor in the bishopric. Designation of a kinsman and protégé was a known, if sometimes controversial, practice in late antique episcopal succession. The Vita presents Aeonius as acting to secure an ascetically formed heir for the church of Arles rather than as a figure whose own monastic profession is described in detail.

Aeonius died in 502. After his death there was opposition in Arles to the succession of Caesarius, but Caesarius was nonetheless chosen and consecrated, beginning an episcopate that lasted until 542. The sources are silent on the precise place of Aeonius’s burial and on any contemporary cult. He does not appear with a widely observed feast in the principal medieval martyrologies, and later hagiographical tradition did not develop around him as it did around several other bishops of Arles. Historical knowledge of Éon d'Arles therefore remains limited to his metropolitan office, his kinship with Caesarius, his role in bringing Caesarius from Lérins into the clergy of Arles, and the date of his death, after which the much more fully recorded career of Caesarius began.
