Biography

Short Description

Ephraim of Antioch, also known as Ephraim of Amida (Greek: Ephraim ho Amidēs), was a sixth-century Chalcedonian patriarch of Antioch and is venerated as a saint in the Eastern Orthodox Church. He was a native of Amida in Roman Mesopotamia, the city later known as Diyarbakır. Before entering the episcopate he followed a secular career in the imperial administration of the Eastern Roman Empire and rose to the office of comes Orientis (Count of the East), a senior civil and military post with authority over the diocese of Oriens. In that role he served under the emperors Justin I and Justinian I and acquired a reputation as an energetic and capable official. No reliable source preserves his year of birth, the names of his parents, or any details of a wife or children.

In May 526 a catastrophic earthquake struck Antioch, killing a great part of the population and, according to contemporary reports, the sitting patriarch Euphrasius. Ephraim was sent to the ruined city in his official capacity to organize relief and reconstruction. The clergy and people of Antioch, impressed by his piety as well as by his administrative skill, elected him as their new bishop. As a layman he received the required ordinations in rapid succession and was installed as patriarch; most sources place the beginning of his patriarchate in 527. He held the see of Antioch for some eighteen years, until his death in 545.

As patriarch, Ephraim was a determined defender of the Christological definition of the Council of Chalcedon (451) against the anti-Chalcedonian (Miaphysite) movement associated above all with Severus of Antioch, who had been deposed from the same see in 518. He travelled through Syria and neighbouring provinces in order to bring bishops, clergy, and monastic communities into communion with the Chalcedonian hierarchy, combining theological argument with the backing of imperial legislation. He composed a number of treatises in Greek in defence of Chalcedonian doctrine, including works directed against Severus and other opponents. Most of these writings survive only in fragments and in later summaries, notably those given by the ninth-century patriarch Photius in his Bibliotheca and in doctrinal florilegia such as the Doctrina Patrum.

Ephraim remained in office through the early decades of Justinian I’s reign and took part in the ecclesiastical politics of that period, including the aftermath of the Constantinopolitan synod of 536, which condemned Severus, Anthimus of Constantinople, and other anti-Chalcedonian leaders. He died in 545. Precise information about the place of his death and burial has not been preserved. The Eastern Orthodox Church commemorates him as a saint on 8 June. He should not be confused with the much earlier Syriac poet and theologian Ephrem the Syrian.
