Biography

Short Description

Epicharis of Rome is numbered among the early Christian martyrs and is commemorated on 27 January in the Eastern Orthodox liturgical calendar. The Greek synaxaria present her as a woman of Roman origin who suffered during the persecution of Christians associated with the emperor Diocletian, that is, in the late third or the opening years of the fourth century. No inscription, contemporary chronicle, or other independent document names her. The only narrative of her passion is the short notice preserved in later Byzantine liturgical collections. For that reason neither her year of birth nor a precise year of death can be established from reliable historical evidence.

According to the traditional account she was known for piety and charitable works before her arrest. Brought before a magistrate, she confessed that she was a Christian. The passio then records a conventional sequence of torments familiar from late antique martyr literature: she was beaten with ox-hide thongs, boiling pitch was poured over her, and she was finally beheaded with the sword at Rome. These particulars belong to the stock repertoire of such acts and cannot be confirmed independently. The texts are silent about her parentage, any marriage, and any children, and they do not assign her to a monastic or clerical order.

Her cult remained modest. She is not a prominent figure in the medieval Latin martyrologies, and no papal bull of canonization or beatification from the later centralized process exists for her. Like most martyrs of the Diocletianic era she entered the calendar through local and liturgical veneration rather than through a formal inquiry comparable to modern canonization. No securely attested patronages of cities, trades, illnesses, or social groups are attached to her name in the standard reference works. A Roman freedwoman of the same name appears in Tacitus’s Annals as a participant in the Pisonian conspiracy of 65 who endured torture without betraying her associates and then took her own life; that woman is not portrayed as a Christian, and the two figures should not be identified on the basis of the shared name alone.

In the absence of further evidence, Epicharis of Rome remains an obscure saint whose memory is carried almost exclusively by the synaxarion tradition of the Christian East.
