Biography

Short Description

Epiphanius the Wise was a monk and hagiographer of late medieval Rus', active in the late fourteenth and early fifteenth centuries. He is remembered as one of the foremost writers of Old Russian literature and as a disciple of Saint Sergius of Radonezh. Reliable sources do not record a precise year of birth. He is generally held to have been a native of Rostov, in the northeast of the Russian lands, and to have received his education there. Rostov at that period possessed a notable school associated with the monastery of Gregory the Theologian, which also educated Stephen of Perm, the missionary bishop whose life Epiphanius would later compose. The intellectual formation he received in Rostov, together with later contact with Byzantine and South Slavic literary culture, shaped the highly ornate prose for which he became known.

Epiphanius entered the Trinity Monastery founded by Sergius of Radonezh and lived there as a monk during the last years of the founder's life. He thus knew Sergius personally and later drew on his own recollections and on the testimony of other disciples when composing the saint's biography. After Sergius died in 1392, Epiphanius left the monastery for a time. His writings allude to journeys that took him to Constantinople, to Jerusalem, and to Mount Athos, indicating a breadth of travel unusual among Russian monks of his generation. He subsequently returned to the Trinity community. In 1408, during the raid of the Tatar emir Edigu on Moscow and its hinterland, he fled with other brethren and found refuge in Tver with Bishop Arsenius. These movements placed him in contact with several of the leading ecclesiastical centers of northeastern Rus'.

His two principal surviving works are the Life of Stephen of Perm and the Life of Sergius of Radonezh. The Life of Stephen was written soon after the bishop's death in 1396. It is a major narrative source for the Christianization of the Komi, or Zyrian, peoples of the Perm region: it describes Stephen's creation of an alphabet for their language, his translation of liturgical texts, his preaching, and his public contest with the pagan priest Pam. The Life of Sergius was begun about 1417 or 1418, twenty-six years after the abbot's death in 1392. Epiphanius gathered oral traditions from monks who had known Sergius and combined them with his own memories of the saint's humility, his labor in the forest wilderness, and the growth of the Trinity community. The original Epiphanian text of the Life of Sergius was later revised and rhetorically amplified by the Serbian monk Pachomius the Logothete, who worked at the Trinity Monastery in the mid-fifteenth century. As a result, reconstructing Epiphanius's exact wording remains a matter of textual scholarship, but the core of the Sergius legend as later generations received it rests on Epiphanius's work.

Epiphanius's prose is distinguished by the style called pletenie sloves, or weaving of words. The manner is marked by dense alliteration, chains of synonyms, elaborate metaphor, rhythmic parallelism, and abundant citation of Scripture and the Church Fathers. It reflects the so-called Second South Slavic Influence that reached Rus' in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries through Bulgarian and Serbian literary models and through renewed contact with Byzantium. This learned and artful style earned him the epithet Premudry, meaning the Wise. He is generally thought to have died about 1420, most likely at the Trinity Monastery where he had spent much of his monastic life. He is venerated as a saint in the Russian Orthodox Church, although a single universally observed feast day is not firmly fixed in the earliest sources. His hagiographical writings remain essential both as literary monuments of Old Russian and as historical evidence for monastic life, missionary work, and the cult of saints in northeastern Rus' at the turn of the fifteenth century.
