Biography

Short Description

Eptvime Genateli is an obscure figure whose name appears in Georgian ecclesiastical onomastics. Eptvime is the Georgian form of the Greek name Euthymius, long used among clergy and monastics of the Eastern churches. The epithet Genateli is toponymic and indicates an association with a place called Genati (or a closely related form), but standard Western and Georgian historical handbooks, synaxaria, and lists of hierarchs do not supply a securely identified biography, dates, or see for this individual. No birth year, death year, or place of origin can be confirmed from reliable published sources, and office-taking dates must not be treated as birth data.

Because the person is not among the well-documented Catholicoi-Patriarchs of Georgia, bishops of major sees, or widely commemorated saints of the Georgian Orthodox Church, claims that he held patriarchal rank, was Bishop of Rome, or received formal papal or patriarchal canonization cannot be sustained. Likewise there is no verified record of a spouse, children, religious order, feast day, or patronage. The absence of these facts in accessible chronicles and hagiographical collections is itself the principal finding: the subject remains poorly attested.

Any fuller account would require unpublished or locally held Georgian sources—monastery commemorative lists, diocesan archives, or inscriptions—that have not been corroborated in the reference literature used here. Until such material is identified and critically assessed, the responsible course is to leave chronological, geographical, and cultic fields blank rather than to infer them from the name alone. Eptvime Genateli therefore stands as a reminder of how many regional church figures of the Caucasus survive only as a name and a toponymic surname, without a recoverable life story.
