Biography

Short Description

Saint Erasmus, known in many regions as Saint Elmo, was a Christian bishop and martyr whose death is placed by tradition in the persecution under the emperor Diocletian, about the year 303. He is associated with the ancient coastal city of Formia (Formiae) in what was then Campania, on the Tyrrhenian shore of Italy. Almost nothing about his life can be established from contemporary records. No reliable birth year or birthplace survives. Later Latin and Greek passiones identify him as a bishop, sometimes of Formia and sometimes, in a legendary strand, of Antioch in Syria, and they describe a period of eremitical life on Mount Lebanon. Pope Gregory the Great, writing in the late sixth century, attests to an established shrine and episcopal cult at Formia, which indicates that veneration of Erasmus as a local martyr-bishop was already old in late antiquity. Modern historians generally accept that a martyr of this name was buried at Formia and that his cult is ancient, while treating the elaborate biographical details of the medieval legends as unhistorical.

According to those later hagiographical accounts, popularized in the West by compilations such as the Golden Legend of Jacobus de Voragine, Erasmus fled the imperial edicts against the Church and took refuge in the mountains, where a raven brought him food. Officers found him, and he was brought before Diocletian and later Maximian. The legends accumulate a long sequence of tortures—scourging, covering with pitch and oil, confinement, and exposure—from which he is repeatedly freed by an angel and restored to preach and baptize, including in Italy. He is said to have converted many and to have continued his ministry in Campania. A late and especially famous episode, not present in the earliest layers of the tradition, claims that his executioners opened his body and wound his intestines upon a windlass or ship’s capstan. That story, however legendary, fixed his iconography: he is represented as a bishop holding a windlass, sometimes with his entrails, and it accounts for his invocation against diseases of the abdomen and intestines. Tradition concludes that he died a martyr at Formia.

The body of the saint was venerated at Formia for centuries. In 842, when seaborne raiders destroyed Formia, the relics were carried for safety to Gaeta, a short distance to the west. There they were enshrined in the cathedral, which bears the dedication of Saints Erasmus and Marcian and of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. Gaeta adopted Erasmus as its principal patron, and Formia continued to honor him as well. The translation of 842 is a fixed point in the history of the cult and explains why Gaeta, rather than Formia, became the main center of his relics. From the coastal shrines of southern Italy, devotion spread among seafarers. Sailors took him as a protector in storm and shipwreck. The bluish electrical discharge that appears on masts and spars in thundery weather came to be called Saint Elmo’s fire and was read as a token that the saint was present and that the ship would be spared. In the later Middle Ages Erasmus was numbered among the Fourteen Holy Helpers, a group of saints invoked in the Rhineland and beyond against plague, sudden death, and particular ailments; his special province within that group was intestinal and abdominal suffering.

The Roman Martyrology keeps his feast on 2 June. Churches, chapels, and altars dedicated to him appeared in port towns around the Mediterranean and along the Atlantic and North Sea coasts, and his images as bishop and martyr with the windlass became familiar in late medieval and Baroque art. He remains the patron of sailors and mariners, of the cities of Gaeta and Formia, and a saint invoked against colic, cramps, and disorders of the stomach and intestines, as well as against storms at sea. The historical Erasmus is thus the Formian martyr whose tomb anchored an early Italian cult; the Erasmus of popular devotion is also the legendary bishop-hermit, the companion of the Holy Helpers, and the seafarers’ Saint Elmo, whose fire still names a well-known maritime phenomenon.
