Biography

Short Description

Erchanbert, whose name appears in Latin sources as Erchanbertus and in some modern works as Erchanpert, was bishop of Freising in Bavaria from 835 or 836 until his death in 854. He came from the Huosi, one of the five aristocratic kindreds (genealogiae) enumerated in the Lex Baiuvariorum, the early medieval law of the Bavarians. The Huosi had supplied several occupants of the Freising see; Erchanbert's uncle Hitto had been bishop from about 811 until 835. In 834 Hitto travelled to Rome and obtained a privilege from Pope Gregory IV for the church of Freising. Later Freising tradition and modern reconstructions of the family's strategy treat that journey as part of Hitto's effort to position his nephew as successor. When Hitto died, Erchanbert succeeded him. No contemporary source records Erchanbert's year or place of birth, and it would be improper to invent one from the date of his accession.

The diocese he inherited was already a major landowner and a centre of Carolingian ecclesiastical culture. Freising had been established in the eighth century in connection with the work of Saint Corbinian and had become a suffragan of Salzburg. Under Charlemagne and Louis the Pious, and then under Louis the German—who ruled Bavaria from the 830s and, after the Treaty of Verdun in 843, the East Frankish kingdom—the Bavarian bishoprics were pillars of royal government as well as of pastoral care. Erchanbert's long episcopate is documented above all by the notices of the Freising Traditionsbuch, in which nobles and lesser free men conveyed lands, unfree dependents, and proprietary churches to the saint and to the bishop. These records show the see continuing to accumulate property across Upper Bavaria and illustrate the bishop's role as a public figure who received, confirmed, and witnessed grants. The cathedral community maintained clergy, a school, and a scriptorium, continuing a learned tradition associated earlier with Bishop Arbeo.

Narrative sources for Erchanbert himself are almost entirely lacking. He left no known theological or hagiographical writings, and no vita was composed after his death. Historians therefore cannot reconstruct his personal spirituality, his preaching, or his precise part in the synods and assemblies of Louis the German's reign with any certainty. He is not numbered among the canonized bishops of Freising—unlike Corbinian, the diocesan founder, or the later Bishop Lantpert—and no medieval feast day, patronage, or formal cult is securely attested for him. In the absence of contrary evidence, and in keeping with Carolingian canonical norms for bishops, he is not recorded as having married or as having children. He was neither pope nor patriarch; Freising remained a suffragan bishopric.

Erchanbert died in 854. Freising necrological tradition gives the date as 1 August. He was succeeded by Anno, who occupied the see until 875. The place of burial is not named in the brief surviving notices. Because ninth-century Bavarian history is documented far more richly by charters than by chronicles or saints' lives, Erchanbert remains a figure known through the institutional record of his church rather than through biography in the narrative sense. His importance for later historians lies in that record: the donations collected under his name help to map landholding, kinship, and the growth of episcopal power in Carolingian Bavaria, and his uncontested succession illustrates how a leading kindred could hold a bishopric across two generations within the framework of East Frankish royal authority.
