Biography

Short Description

Saint Erhard of Regensburg, sometimes also called Erhard of Narbonne, was a missionary bishop associated with Bavaria in the seventh century. No contemporary records of his life survive, and nearly everything that can be said about him rests on later medieval vitae, liturgical commemoration, and the local cult that grew up around relics kept at Regensburg. One strand of tradition presents him as an Irish peregrinus who left his homeland to evangelize on the Continent, a motif frequently attached to early medieval missionary saints in the German lands. Another tradition links him with Narbonne in Septimania. Neither claim can be verified from independent historical evidence, and modern scholars treat both with caution.

He is remembered as having exercised episcopal functions in the region of Regensburg, yet he does not appear in the more reliable later catalogues of the residential bishops of that see. It is therefore possible that he served as a missionary bishop or chorepiscopus rather than as a diocesan ordinary in the later canonical sense. The best-known episode attached to his name is the baptism of Saint Odilia of Hohenburg in Alsace. According to the legend, already current in the High Middle Ages, Odilia had been born blind; when Erhard baptized her she received her sight. The story connects him with the Alsatian monastic world and with the family of the Etichonid dukes. Later sources also credit him with a role in the foundation or early fostering of monastic communities, including the house that became Niedermünster in Regensburg. In some local traditions he is associated with Saint Albert of Cashel, another figure of purported Irish origin.

By the eleventh century a well-established cult existed at Regensburg. Relics identified as those of Erhard were enshrined in the abbey church of Niedermünster, where a tomb and, in later centuries, notable works of art commemorated him. The Roman Martyrology and the diocesan calendar of Regensburg assign his feast to 8 January. In popular devotion he came to be invoked as a patron of the city of Regensburg, of bakers, and of people suffering from diseases of the eyes, the last of these patronages clearly reflecting the Odilia legend. Because the earliest narrative accounts were composed centuries after the period in which he is supposed to have lived, many biographical particulars remain historically uncertain. He belongs to that class of early medieval missionary bishops whose memory was preserved, and in part shaped, by the monastic and civic communities that claimed them as founders and heavenly protectors. His veneration has continued in the Diocese of Regensburg and in related regional traditions.
