Biography

Short Description

Saint Ermenfrid of Cusance (also known as Ermenfred, Ermenfroi, or Latin Ermenfredus) was a seventh-century Frankish monk, monastic founder, and abbot, venerated as a saint in the Catholic Church. Contemporary documentary evidence for his life is lacking; the surviving notices belong to later medieval hagiographical and liturgical tradition associated with the abbey of Luxeuil and the diocese of Besançon. He is said to have been born of a noble family in the region of Besançon, in the eastern Frankish lands (the area of present-day Franche-Comté), during the seventh century. Tradition places part of his youth at the Merovingian royal court before he embraced the monastic life.

He entered the abbey of Luxeuil, the great Columbanian house in the Vosges founded by Saint Columbanus, at a time when it was governed by Abbot Waldebert (Saint Valbert). There he was formed in the austere Irish-influenced observance that characterized Luxeuil, an observance later blended in many of its daughter houses with the Rule of Saint Benedict. After a period as a monk of Luxeuil, Ermenfrid established a new monastery at Cusance, in a valley of the Doubs in the Jura, on lands within the sphere of the church of Besançon. The foundation belonged to the wider network of houses that radiated from Luxeuil and helped to organize Christian life in rural Burgundy and the surrounding districts.

As abbot of Cusance he directed a community dedicated to liturgical prayer, ascetic discipline, and the Columbanian monastic ideal. Specific incidents of his rule, miracles later attributed to him, and the precise circumstances of the foundation are not preserved in early sources and appear only in later pious accounts of limited historical value. He died at Cusance on 25 September, the date retained as his feast in local calendars; the year is not known with certainty but falls in the later seventh century (later compilers often give about 670). He was buried at the monastery he had founded.

The cult of Ermenfrid remained essentially local, centered on Cusance and the diocese of Besançon. He does not figure in the general Roman Martyrology of later centuries and was never the object of a formal papal canonization of the type that developed in the later Middle Ages. Like many monastic founders of the Merovingian period, he was honored as a saint by popular veneration and episcopal recognition. The monastery of Cusance itself did not endure as a major house, and with its decline much of the historical memory of its founder faded. He is remembered as one of the lesser-known saints who extended Columbanian monasticism in seventh-century Francia.
