Biography

Short Description

Estephan El Douaihy, also known as Istifan al-Duwayhi or Stephen Douaihy, was born on 2 August 1630 in the mountain village of Ehden in northern Mount Lebanon, then under Ottoman rule. He belonged to the Douaihy family, a prominent Maronite clan of the region that had already supplied clergy to the church. In 1641, while still a child, he was sent to Rome to study at the Maronite College, founded in the late sixteenth century by Pope Gregory XIII to form Maronite clergy in Catholic doctrine while preserving their Eastern rite and Syriac heritage. He remained in Rome for about fourteen years, studying philosophy, theology, church history, Latin, and Italian in addition to Arabic and Syriac. He was ordained to the priesthood in 1656 and soon afterward returned to Mount Lebanon.

After his return he worked as a preacher, teacher, and visitor of Maronite communities in Lebanon and in diaspora centers, including Aleppo and Cyprus. In 1668 he was consecrated a bishop and appointed to the Maronite see of Cyprus, though his pastoral activity remained closely tied to the Lebanese mountain. On 20 May 1670 the Maronite bishops elected him Patriarch of Antioch, head of the Maronite Church; Pope Clement X confirmed the election. He made his principal residence the ancient Monastery of Our Lady of Qannoubine in the Kadisha Valley, the traditional patriarchal seat in an age when the community lived under Ottoman administration and local feudal power and often needed a remote, defensible monastic refuge.

His patriarchate of some thirty-four years unfolded amid political fragmentation in Mount Lebanon, the authority of local emirs and muqaddams, and the overarching power of the Ottoman state. El Douaihy sought to strengthen clerical discipline, promote the education of priests and laypeople, and safeguard Maronite liturgical books and customs, while remaining a determined advocate of full communion with the See of Rome. He is celebrated above all as a historian and man of letters. His writings include a regional chronicle commonly known as Tarikh al-Azmina (History of the Times), a history of the Maronite Church and its patriarchs, studies of the Maronite liturgy, calendar, and feast days, and apologetic works defending the claim that the Maronites had remained orthodox and in union with Rome. He collected manuscripts and recorded local traditions, becoming the foundational figure of Maronite historiography and earning from later generations the title of father of Maronite history.

El Douaihy died on 3 May 1704 at Qannoubine and was buried at the patriarchal monastery. Maronites have long remembered him as one of their greatest patriarchs, combining monastic residence in the mountain, Roman theological formation, pastoral care under difficult political conditions, and a lasting contribution to their historical self-understanding. The Catholic Church recognized his heroic virtues when Pope Benedict XVI declared him Venerable in 2008. Pope Francis later approved a miracle attributed to his intercession, and he was beatified in 2024.
