Biography

Short Description

Étienne de Châtillon, known in Latin as Stephanus de Castellione and in English as Stephen of Châtillon, was a French Carthusian monk and bishop of the late twelfth and early thirteenth centuries. He was born at Châtillon-sur-Chalaronne in the Dombes, a district near Lyon in what is now the department of Ain. The exact year of his birth is not preserved in contemporary records and is given only approximately in later tradition. He came from a family of local standing that took its name from the place. After an education that prepared him for the clerical state, he was ordained priest. Instead of remaining among the secular clergy, he sought the stricter life of the Carthusian order and entered the charterhouse of Portes in the Bugey, a house founded in the early twelfth century in the Jura mountains and following the customs established by Saint Bruno at the Grande Chartreuse.

At Portes he lived the Carthusian combination of solitary cell life, manual work, and communal liturgy. In time the community elected him prior. As prior he acquired a reputation for austerity, prudence, and holiness that reached beyond the monastery. When the see of Die in the Dauphiné fell vacant in the first years of the thirteenth century, he was chosen bishop, an appointment commonly dated to 1202 or 1203. The selection ran against both his personal wish to remain in the cloister and the Carthusian preference for withdrawal from public office, yet he accepted. Die was a modest diocese, suffragan to the archbishop of Vienne. As bishop he continued to practise much of the simplicity of his monastic formation, keeping a restrained household and a life of prayer.

His short episcopate was marked by efforts to restore clerical discipline, to administer the sacraments faithfully, to defend the temporal rights of the Church against local lords, and to relieve the poor. Accounts of his life stress personal holiness and charity rather than political prominence. He died on 7 September 1208, after roughly six years as bishop, and is generally held to have died in his episcopal city of Die. Devotion to him began soon after his death. Miracles were reported at his tomb, and he came to be honoured as a saint in the local church of the Dauphiné and in Carthusian calendars. His feast is kept on 7 September, the anniversary of his death.

No surviving document records a formal papal canonization of the later medieval type, and the precise steps by which his cult was recognized remain obscure. He is nonetheless accepted as a saint in Catholic tradition, especially in the former diocese of Die, in the Bugey, and among the Carthusians. The historical record for his life is thin: it rests on later hagiographical notices, diocesan tradition, and the consistent dating of his death rather than on a rich contemporary archive. What can be said with confidence is that a Carthusian prior from Portes became bishop of Die in the opening years of the thirteenth century, governed with a reputation for austerity and charity, and was venerated after his death on 7 September 1208.
