Biography

Short Description

Étienne Pernet was born on 23 July 1824 in the village of Vellexon in the Haute-Saône department of eastern France. He came from a modest rural household and lost his father while still a child, after which he was raised by his mother in a Catholic setting typical of Franche-Comté in that period. He received a basic education, worked for a time as a schoolteacher, and then pursued a priestly and religious vocation. In 1849 he entered the Congregation of the Augustinians of the Assumption (the Assumptionists), the institute founded by Emmanuel d’Alzon, and was later ordained a priest. The Assumptionists of the mid-nineteenth century were engaged in education, preaching, and other apostolates in France, and Pernet’s early religious life unfolded within that framework.

His later work was shaped by contact with the urban poor of industrial Paris. He observed that when a mother in a working-class family fell ill, the household could collapse: children went untended, wages were lost, and families were broken up. He became convinced that a new form of women’s religious life was needed, one in which sisters would go into the homes of the sick poor, nurse without charge, and also take on domestic work and the care of children so that the family could remain together. That pastoral idea, rather than a purely institutional or hospital model of charity, became the core of his foundation.

In 1865, together with Antoinette Fage (in religion Mother Marie de Jésus), he founded the Little Sisters of the Assumption in Paris. The congregation combined nursing of the sick poor in their own dwellings with household help and a strong spiritual purpose, seeking to bring Christian presence into the homes of workers. Pernet remained the sisters’ founder and spiritual guide as the institute took shape and began to spread in France and, in time, beyond. He continued as an Assumptionist priest while directing this work; the Little Sisters were a distinct congregation, not a branch of the Assumptionists, though closely linked to him personally.

Pernet died in Paris on 3 April 1899. He was beatified by Pope John Paul II on 23 October 1983. He was not subsequently canonized. His memory is tied above all to the Little Sisters of the Assumption and to nineteenth-century Catholic concern for the urban working poor. Details of his burial site and any official patronages are not treated here as independently verified beyond the main biographical outline.
