Biography

Short Description

Eucherius of Lyon, known in Latin as Eucherius Lugdunensis, was a fifth-century Gallo-Roman aristocrat, monk, bishop of Lyon, and ecclesiastical writer, later venerated as a saint in the Latin Church. He belonged to an illustrious senatorial family of Roman Gaul; the exact place and year of his birth are not preserved in the surviving sources. Before he entered the religious life he married a woman named Galla. The couple had two sons, Salonius and Veranus (also spelled Veranius), both of whom received a careful Christian education and in due course became bishops—Salonius of Geneva and Veranus of Vence in Provence. After some years of married and public life, Eucherius and Galla resolved to devote themselves more completely to God. He withdrew to the monastery founded by Honoratus on the island of Lérins, off the Mediterranean coast of Gaul, while Galla entered a life of religious retirement.

On Lérins, and for a period as a hermit on a neighbouring island often identified as Lero (modern Sainte-Marguerite), Eucherius combined severe ascetic practice with the study of Scripture and the Fathers. The island community was then a leading centre of Latin monastic culture, in contact with the Egyptian-inspired teaching associated with John Cassian. Cassian dedicated a portion of his Conferences to Eucherius. Salvian of Marseille was among those who taught Eucherius’s sons. From this milieu Eucherius produced Latin works that circulated among the clergy of Gaul. The Formulae spiritalis intelligentiae, dedicated to Veranus, is a compact handbook of biblical allegory and spiritual interpretation. The two books of Instructiones, dedicated to Salonius, treat biblical names, places, and difficult passages. De laude eremi, addressed to Hilary of Arles, praises the desert and the monastic vocation. He also composed an account of the martyrdom of the Theban Legion at Agaunum, a text that helped shape the later cult of those martyrs, together with letters to contemporaries.

In the mid-430s the church of Lyon, a metropolitan see of great antiquity in Gaul, called Eucherius from the monastery to be its bishop. As bishop he retained a reputation for learning and personal austerity. He is recorded as having taken part in the First Council of Orange in 441, a gathering of Gallic bishops concerned with discipline and church order, held under the presidency of Hilary of Arles. Later witnesses confirm his standing: Gennadius of Marseille included him among ecclesiastical writers, and Sidonius Apollinaris praised his eloquence. He was neither Bishop of Rome nor patriarch of an Eastern see; Lyon, though a principal church of Gaul, was not a patriarchal throne.

Eucherius died in the middle of the fifth century. The year 449 is the date traditionally assigned to his death, and he is generally held to have died at Lyon, where he was still bishop. He was honoured as a saint in the pre-congregational manner of late antiquity; his feast is observed on 16 November. The precise location of his tomb is not securely established in the early sources, and no well-documented list of later patronages attaches to his name. His historical importance lies in the link he formed between Lérins monasticism and the episcopal church of Lyon, and in the survival of his exegetical and ascetical writings, which illustrate the spiritual and literary culture of fifth-century Gaul.
