Biography

Short Description

Eudemus I, known in Georgian as Evdemoz I Diasamidze, was Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia from 1632 until his death in 1642. He belonged to the Diasamidze, a princely (tavadi) house associated with the historical region of Samtskhe in southern Georgia. No surviving chronicle or modern reference work records a verified year or place of birth, and nothing reliable is known of his childhood, education, or monastic formation before his elevation. As with other occupants of the Georgian catholicosal throne, he was drawn from the celibate monastic clergy of the Georgian Orthodox Church rather than from the married parish priesthood.

His decade in office coincided with one of the most difficult passages in the history of eastern Georgia. In 1632 the Safavid shah installed Rostom, a Bagratid prince who had converted to Islam and been raised at the Persian court, as king of Kartli. At the same time Teimuraz I of Kakheti continued to resist Persian overlordship and to present himself as the champion of a Christian Georgian monarchy. The Church, whose catholicos-patriarch remained the principal national institution still explicitly Christian in character, was caught between these rival centers of power. Historical tradition records that Eudemus aligned himself with Teimuraz and with those nobles who opposed Rostom’s pro-Persian court, rather than with the new Kartlian regime.

Sparse notices in Georgian historical writing present Eudemus as a defender of Orthodoxy under a Muslim Georgian king. Rostom allowed the Church a measure of institutional continuity, but his court promoted Persian political norms and relied on a mixed Muslim and converted elite. Episcopal appointments, church property, and the public standing of Christianity in Tbilisi and Mtskheta became points of friction. Details of Eudemus’s internal administration—synods, monastic life, or relations with neighboring Caucasian churches—have not been transmitted in any fullness, so his patriarchate is known more for its political setting than for a documented programme of reform.

In 1642 a conspiracy was formed against Rostom with the aim of removing the Persian-backed king and restoring a Christian ruler in association with Teimuraz I. According to Georgian historical tradition, the catholicos was implicated in this plot. The conspiracy was discovered; Eudemus was arrested and put to death the same year, ending his pontificate by violence. Later catalogues of the catholicos-patriarchs of Georgia uniformly close his tenure in 1642. The precise manner of execution, the town in which he died, and the site of his burial are not established with certainty in the sources available to modern historians.

Eudemus I is therefore known through his office, family origin, political alignment, and the reported circumstances of his death, rather than through a full personal biography. He does not appear in the principal liturgical calendars of the Georgian Orthodox Church with an assigned feast day, and no standard reference records a formal act of canonization or beatification. His historical importance lies in illustrating the predicament of the Georgian patriarchate in the mid-seventeenth century, when the Church remained a vehicle of Christian and national identity under a Muslim king installed by Iran.
