Biography

Short Description

Eufrozyna of Suzdal (Church Slavonic and Russian: Evfrosiniia Suzdalskaia), born Theodulia (Feoduliia), was a Rurikid princess and Orthodox nun of the thirteenth century. She was a daughter of Prince Mikhail Vsevolodovich of Chernigov, the prince later killed at the Golden Horde in 1246 and venerated as Saint Michael of Chernigov. Traditional accounts, drawn chiefly from a sixteenth-century vita composed at Suzdal, place her birth in 1212 at Chernigov, then the seat of a major southern principality of Kievan Rus'. Contemporary chronicles say almost nothing about her childhood. The later Life describes a princely upbringing marked by literacy and devotion, in keeping with the pious reputation of Michael's household, but those details cannot be independently confirmed.

In adolescence she was betrothed to a prince of Suzdal, whom the vita names Mina. He died before the wedding could take place, and Theodulia remained in Suzdal rather than returning to Chernigov. She entered the convent of the Deposition of the Robe of the Theotokos (the Rizopolozhensky Monastery), receiving the monastic name Euphrosyne (Eufrozyna). Later tradition presents her as a severe ascetic and eventually as abbess of the community. She is associated with the spiritual direction of nuns and lay visitors and with a reputation for insight and miracle-working of the kind conventional in early modern Russian hagiography. She never married and had no children.

The Mongol assault on the Vladimir-Suzdal land in 1238, during which the city of Suzdal was taken and burned, is a central episode in her legend. According to the Life, the convent was preserved from destruction through her prayers. Whether or not the particulars can be verified, the story reflects the memory of a monastic house that survived the invasion and later attributed its deliverance to her intercession. She is reported to have died on 25 September 1250 and to have been buried in her monastery.

Veneration of Euphrosyne remained local to Suzdal for a long period. Her relics were regarded as incorrupt, and an uncovering of the relics, commemorated on 18 September, is linked in later sources with the end of the seventeenth century. She was received into the wider calendar of the Russian Orthodox Church, with her principal feast on 25 September. Because the main narrative source is late and conventional, historians treat many biographical particulars with caution. The secure core is that a Chernigov princess became a nun at Suzdal in the second quarter of the thirteenth century, that her memory was cultivated in that city, and that by the early modern period she occupied a firm place in the Orthodox calendar of Rus'.
