Biography

Short Description

Saint Eugendus, known in French as Oyend or Oyan (and in Latin as Augendus), was a Gallo-Roman monk and abbot of the monastery of Condat in the Jura mountains of eastern Gaul. He was born in the mid-fifth century at Izernore, in the ancient territory of the Sequani, now in the department of Ain in France. His father, a Christian who later became a priest, taught him to read and write. At the age of seven he was given to Saints Romanus and Lupicinus, founders of the monastic settlement at Condat (Condadisco), to be raised in the monastic life. From that time he never left the monastery.

The community followed a severe discipline inspired by the desert fathers and by Eastern monastic rules. Eugendus embraced that austerity while also pursuing learning. He acquired Latin and Greek and was well versed in the writings of the Church Fathers. He copied manuscripts and otherwise served the intellectual as well as the spiritual life of a remote mountain house. Despite the respect he enjoyed, he declined holy orders and remained a simple monk, a choice consistent with strands of early Gallic monasticism in which spiritual authority was not always tied to clerical rank. He is described as humble, stable, and given to prayer and work within the enclosure.

When Abbot Minausius grew old he made Eugendus his coadjutor. On Minausius’s death, toward the end of the fifth century, Eugendus became the fourth abbot of Condat. As abbot he preserved the observance while making practical changes: he is said to have improved the monks’ previously very harsh diet and to have built a larger church dedicated to the apostles Peter, Paul, and Andrew. The community grew in numbers and reputation. Hagiographical tradition attributes miracles, including healings, to him. He continued in personal poverty and monastic stability until his death.

Eugendus died on 1 January, in the year traditionally given as 510, and was buried at the monastery. In later generations the abbey and the settlement around it were called Saint-Oyend-de-Joux in his honor; only in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries did the name Saint-Claude, commemorating a later abbot, become general. His cult is ancient and his feast is kept on 1 January. The principal source is the sixth-century Vita Patrum Jurensium (Lives of the Jura Fathers), which also treats Romanus and Lupicinus and presents Eugendus as a model of perseverance, learning, and moderate governance. No writings of his own survive. Precise details of his family and of the year of his birth are not securely attested. He was not the object of a later formal papal canonization; his sainthood rests on continuous local and liturgical veneration from late antiquity.
