Biography

Short Description

Eugene Sergeyevich Botkin (Yevgeny Sergeyevich Botkin) was born in 1865 at Tsarskoye Selo in the Russian Empire, the son of the celebrated physician Sergey Petrovich Botkin, who had served as personal doctor to Tsars Alexander II and Alexander III and taught at the Imperial Medical-Surgical Academy. Raised in a household that combined high medical standing with proximity to the court, he studied medicine at the Imperial Military Medical Academy in Saint Petersburg and completed further training in Germany, including work in Berlin and Heidelberg. After qualifying toward the end of the nineteenth century he practiced in Saint Petersburg hospitals. During the Russo-Japanese War he volunteered for medical duty with the Red Cross, an episode that strengthened his reputation for professional competence and personal selflessness.

In the first decade of the twentieth century he was appointed physician-in-ordinary to the imperial household and became the attending doctor of Tsar Nicholas II, Tsarina Alexandra Feodorovna, and their children, including the hemophiliac heir, Tsarevich Alexei. He had married Olga Vladimirovna Manuilova; they had four children, among them Dmitry, Yuri, Tatiana, and Gleb. The marriage later ended in divorce. One son, Dmitry, was killed while serving in the First World War. Despite these private losses Botkin remained at his post, and after the February Revolution of 1917 and the emperor’s abdication he declined to abandon the family, accompanying them into internal exile first at Tobolsk in Siberia and then at Yekaterinburg in the Urals.

Confined with them in the Ipatiev House, he continued to act as physician and companion. On the night of 16–17 July 1918 he was shot and killed together with the former imperial family and three other retainers—Anna Demidova, Alexei Trupp, and Ivan Kharitonov—by a Bolshevik firing squad. Contemporary testimony and later historical investigation present him as having stayed of his own will, from loyalty and a sense of duty rather than from compulsion. The bodies were concealed near Yekaterinburg; remains identified in the late twentieth century as those of Botkin and most of the other victims were reburied in 1998 in the Peter and Paul Cathedral in Saint Petersburg.

The Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia glorified him in 1981 among the new martyrs of Russia. The Moscow Patriarchate of the Russian Orthodox Church canonized him in 2016 as the Righteous Passion-Bearer Yevgeny, a lay physician commemorated on 17 July with the imperial family. Orthodox memory of Botkin centers on his voluntary sharing of the captivity and death of those in his care, rather than on any monastic or hierarchical office, which he never held.
