Biography

Short Description

Eugenius of Carthage was a fifth-century bishop and confessor who led the Catholic Church in North Africa under the Arian Vandal kingdom. After Bishop Deogratias of Carthage died in 457, the Vandal rulers forbade the election of a Catholic successor, and the primatial see of Africa remained vacant for roughly twenty-four years. In 480 or 481 King Huneric permitted an election, and Eugenius was chosen bishop of Carthage. Surviving sources do not preserve a birth year, family origin, or early career beyond his association with the Carthaginian church; he enters the historical record only at the moment of his elevation.

As bishop he was noted for preaching, for defense of Nicene doctrine, and for organized charity, including care of the poor and of captives. In 483 Huneric convoked a conference of Catholic and Arian bishops at Carthage. Eugenius asked that Catholic bishops from other provinces be allowed to attend and submitted a written profession of faith on the consubstantial Trinity. The meeting failed. In February 484 Huneric issued an edict closing Catholic churches, seizing property, and punishing non-conforming clergy with exile, mutilation, or forced labor. Eugenius was deported to Turris Tamalleni, a remote desert site in Tripolitania.

Huneric died later in 484. His successor Gunthamund eased the persecution and, around 487, allowed Eugenius and other exiles to return. Eugenius resumed his ministry in Carthage for several years. When Thrasamund became king in 496, pressure on the Catholic hierarchy resumed. Eugenius was banished a second time, now to Gaul under Visigothic rule. Ancient and medieval notices disagree on the exact place of this last exile, some naming the district of Albi and others Vienne. He died in exile on 13 July 505.

A profession of faith and related anti-Arian fragments are attributed to him. The chief narrative of the persecution is the History of the Vandal Persecution by his contemporary Victor of Vita; later Gallic writers also mention him. Veneration as a confessor-saint is recorded in the Roman Martyrology, which keeps his feast on 13 July and praises his eloquence and constancy. He is remembered as a defender of Nicene orthodoxy who died in exile of natural causes, not as a martyr killed by violence. No reliable early source records a spouse, children, monastic profession, or burial place.
