Biography

Short Description

Eugenia of Alsace, known in French as Eugénie d'Alsace, was an eighth-century noblewoman of the Etichonid family who became abbess of Hohenburg Abbey, the mountain monastery later called Mont Sainte-Odile in Alsace. Traditional genealogies identify her as a daughter of Adalbert, Duke of Alsace, who died in 723, and of his wife Gerlinde, which would make Eugenia a granddaughter of Duke Adalrich, also called Eticho, and a niece of Saint Odile, foundress and first abbess of Hohenburg. The same tradition gives her several siblings, among them Luitfrid, who followed Adalbert as duke, Eberhard, Saint Attala, who became abbess of the monastery of Saint-Étienne in Strasbourg, and Gundlinda, connected with the convent of Niedermünster at the foot of the same mountain. These relationships are drawn chiefly from the Vita Sanctae Odiliae and from later medieval accounts of the Alsatian ducal house; they are not corroborated by charters or other strictly contemporary eighth-century evidence, and historians therefore treat the precise family tree with caution even while accepting the broader reality of Etichonid patronage of Hohenburg.

After the death of Saint Odile, which tradition places in 720, Eugenia is reported to have succeeded her aunt as abbess of Hohenburg. The abbey occupied a dramatic site on a Vosges summit above the Alsatian plain and served both as a religious community and as a dynastic foundation of the dukes of Alsace. In that office Eugenia would have directed the spiritual life and the estates of a house whose members were typically drawn from the regional aristocracy. No contemporary rule text from Hohenburg survives. Later Catholic tradition classifies Eugenia as a Benedictine abbess, which accords with the eventual identification of many Frankish women's monasteries with the Rule of Saint Benedict, although seventh- and eighth-century communities in Austrasia often followed mixed observances that also reflected Columbanian influence. No independent early vita of Eugenia is known, and therefore no reliable narrative of particular administrative acts, miracles, or writings can be given.

Later martyrologies and Alsatian liturgical calendars assign her death to 16 September 735 and locate it at Hohenburg, where she was buried. The year, like much else in her dossier, is traditional rather than documented by an eighth-century obituary. Her cult remained local, overshadowed by the far greater devotion paid to Saint Odile, and it was never the object of a formal papal canonization of the kind that became standard in the later Middle Ages; she belongs to the large number of early medieval saints recognized by popular and episcopal veneration. The Catholic Church keeps her feast on 16 September. Her sister Attala of Strasbourg is likewise honored as a saint and is usually said to have died in the early 740s. Relics associated with the early abbesses were long preserved at Hohenburg; the monastery continued in various canonical forms for centuries and was secularized during the French Revolution, after which Mont Sainte-Odile remained a pilgrimage site primarily because of Odile.

Modern knowledge of Eugenia is therefore limited. She stands in the historical record as a member of the leading aristocratic family of early medieval Alsace and as the second abbess of one of the region's most important women's monasteries, but almost every biographical particular depends on hagiography written well after her lifetime. She is not known to have been married or to have had children; the sources present her as a consecrated monastic superior. She held neither the papacy nor a patriarchal see. Unlike Saint Odile, who became patron of Alsace and of the blind, Eugenia did not acquire a wide set of specialized patronages. Her memory is preserved in local calendars, in the history of Hohenburg, and in the genealogy of the Etichonids, as an example of the way Frankish ducal families of the seventh and eighth centuries placed daughters at the head of family monasteries.
