Biography

Short Description

Eulogius of Alexandria was the Chalcedonian (Melkite) patriarch of Alexandria in the late sixth and early seventh centuries, heading the minority Greek-speaking orthodox community in Egypt while the larger Miaphysite church followed its own line of Coptic patriarchs. Reliable early notices describe him as a monk of the monastery of the Mother of God at Antioch, where he was known for scriptural and patristic learning and for eloquence; later Eastern synaxaria add that he was born in Antioch and served as abbot of that house, but contemporary evidence does not confirm the place of his birth. He was elected to the patriarchal throne of Alexandria around 580, in the reign of Tiberius II Constantine or at the outset of Maurice’s rule, and occupied the see for nearly three decades. In that office he represented imperial Chalcedonian orthodoxy in a province whose Christian majority rejected the Council of Chalcedon.

His surviving reputation is chiefly theological. He wrote extensively against Eutychianism and other Miaphysite groups active in Egypt, including the Theodosians and Gaianites, and against Nestorianizing positions associated with Theodore of Mopsuestia and Theodoret. He also composed works against the Novatians and a substantial refutation of the Agnoetae, a Theodosian circle linked with Themistius of Alexandria that taught that Christ, in his humanity, was ignorant of certain things, including the day of judgment. Almost all of these writings are lost in full. In the ninth century Photius summarized several of them in the Bibliotheca, mentioning discourses on the Trinity and the Incarnation, books against Severus of Antioch and Timothy Aelurus, and a series of treatises against the Agnoetae; scattered fragments of homilies and dogmatic passages survive in catenae. Ancient and medieval notices praise his charity and his pastoral care for a flock that was politically favored yet numerically weak in Alexandria and the Egyptian countryside.

Eulogius was a correspondent and friend of Pope Gregory the Great. Their letters, preserved among Gregory’s Registrum, show mutual esteem and a shared concern for Chalcedonian Christology. Gregory discussed with him the Agnoetae and other doctrinal questions, and the two also touched on wider ecclesiastical issues, including the style “ecumenical patriarch” then used at Constantinople. Gregory sent gifts and sought communion in relics and writings; Eulogius in return forwarded treatises and tokens of fellowship. The exchange is one of the last well-documented links between Rome and the Chalcedonian see of Alexandria before the Persian occupation of Egypt and, a generation later, the Arab conquest. It also illustrates how the Roman bishop and the Alexandrian Chalcedonian patriarch still treated one another as colleagues in a common imperial church.

Eulogius died in Alexandria in the first decade of the seventh century, most often dated to 608, after a patriarchate of about twenty-eight years. He was succeeded in the Chalcedonian line by Theodore, after whose brief tenure John the Almsgiver became patriarch. Eulogius has been venerated as a saint in both East and West without a later formal process of canonization; his cult rests on ancient liturgical commemoration. The Roman Martyrology keeps his feast on 13 September; some Eastern calendars commemorate him on 13 February. Nothing secure is recorded of his burial place, and he is not commonly invoked as patron of particular cities, professions, or causes. His historical importance lies in his role as a learned defender of Chalcedon in Egypt and as a partner of Gregory the Great on the eve of the seventh-century crises that transformed the Christian East.
