Biography

Short Description

Euphemia of Racibórz, known in Polish as Eufemia raciborska and in some sources by the diminutive Ofka, was a princess of the Silesian branch of the Piast dynasty. She was born around the turn of the fourteenth century, the daughter of Duke Przemysł of Racibórz and Duchess Anna of Masovia. Her father ruled the Duchy of Racibórz in Upper Silesia, one of the many Piast principalities created by the fragmentation of Poland in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. Her mother was a daughter of Duke Konrad II of Czersk, so Euphemia was a Piast on both sides. She had at least two siblings who reached adulthood: her brother Leszek, who succeeded their father as duke in 1306, and her sister Anna, who married Nicholas II, Duke of Opava. The Racibórz court in her childhood stood at a political crossroads, as the Silesian dukes were being drawn from the Polish kingdom toward the expanding power of the Luxembourg kings of Bohemia.

Unlike many Piast princesses, whose marriages served as instruments of alliance, Euphemia entered religious life. In the years after her father’s death, a convent of Dominican nuns was established in Racibórz with ducal support, attached to the church of the Holy Spirit. Euphemia took the habit there while still young, joining the Second Order of Saint Dominic. The Dominican nuns followed a life of enclosure, the Divine Office, and penitential discipline under the rule adapted for women of the Order of Preachers. Racibórz thus became both her family seat and her cloister; she spent the remainder of her life in that house and never contracted a marriage.

By the middle of the fourteenth century she had been elected prioress of the convent. In that office she governed the community’s spiritual observance and temporal goods at a time when her brother’s duchy had already done homage to the Bohemian crown—Leszek submitted to King John of Bohemia in 1327—and when Upper Silesia was exposed to the dynastic and military pressures of the period. She lived to see the male line of the Racibórz Piasts fail: when Leszek died in 1336 without male heirs, the duchy passed through her sister Anna to Nicholas II of Opava. Later tradition, preserved in regional chronicles and early modern Catholic writing, described Euphemia as austere, devout, and exemplary in the duties of a religious superior. She died in Racibórz on 17 January 1359.

She was buried in the church of the Dominican nuns in Racibórz. A local cult of her memory developed in subsequent generations, of the kind often accorded to pious Piast women who had died in the cloister. Early modern Silesian writers sometimes styled her blessed, and her resting place was treated with honor, but she was not the object of a formal process of beatification or canonization by the Holy See. The convent itself lasted until the Prussian secularization of the early nineteenth century. Modern historical literature remembers Euphemia primarily as a well-documented example of a Silesian Piast princess who chose the Dominican life, and as a figure of local religious memory in Racibórz rather than as a universally recognized saint.
