Biography

Short Description

Saint Euphemia, known in the Eastern churches as Euphemia the All-Praised, was a Christian virgin martyr associated with Chalcedon in Bithynia, on the Asian shore of the Bosporus opposite Byzantium. According to the traditional accounts of her passion, she was the daughter of a senator named Philophronos and his wife Theodosia, both Christians, and was raised in the faith. The precise year of her birth is not recorded in sources that can be independently verified. She is said to have dedicated herself to virginity. Chalcedon in the late third and early fourth centuries was an important city of the Roman Empire, and a Christian community was already established there before the great persecution under Diocletian.

During that persecution the governor Priscus is said to have ordered the inhabitants of Chalcedon to offer sacrifice to the god Ares. Euphemia, together with other Christians, refused. The legendary Acts describe a series of tortures: imprisonment, the wheel, fire, and finally exposure to wild beasts in the arena, where a bear or lion inflicted the wound that caused her death. These narrative details belong to the conventional repertoire of late antique martyr acts and cannot be confirmed independently. What can be said with greater confidence is that a martyr named Euphemia was venerated at Chalcedon from an early date, and that her death was associated with the Diocletianic persecution of the early fourth century. Martyrologies place her feast of martyrdom on 16 September; the year itself is variously given in later sources as 303, 304, or 307 and is not securely established.

The cult of Saint Euphemia became one of the most prominent in the Christian East. A great basilica was built over her tomb at Chalcedon. In 451 the Fourth Ecumenical Council met in that church. According to a well-known later tradition, when the assembled bishops could not agree, the orthodox definition of the two natures in Christ and the opposing statement were both placed in the saint’s tomb or reliquary; the next day the Chalcedonian tome was found in her right hand and the other document at her feet, a sign taken as heavenly confirmation of the council’s faith. Whether or not the miracle is historical, it powerfully associated Euphemia with the defense of Chalcedonian orthodoxy. In the East she is therefore commemorated on 11 July for this event as well as on 16 September for her martyrdom.

Her relics were later translated. In the seventh century, during the Persian and then Arab wars, they were brought to Constantinople and enshrined in a church near the Hippodrome. Portions were subsequently carried west; the city of Rovinj in Istria (modern Croatia) claims her body and honors her as its patron. She is depicted in art as a young woman, often with the martyr’s palm and the wild beast of her passion, and sometimes with the scroll or tome of the Council of Chalcedon. She was never the object of a formal papal canonization of the later medieval type; her cult is ancient and was received throughout the churches of East and West. Historical scholarship treats the Acts of her martyrdom as largely legendary while accepting the existence of an early and important cult of a Chalcedonian martyr of that name.
