Biography

Short Description

Saint Euphrosyne of Alexandria is a Christian saint associated with fifth-century Egypt, known almost exclusively through a widely circulated hagiographical Life rather than through contemporary historical documents. In the traditional narrative she was the only daughter of Paphnutius, a wealthy Christian of Alexandria, and of his wife, who had long been childless. After her birth, which the story attributes to the couple's prayers, she received a thorough instruction in the Christian scriptures and in the pious practices of a well-to-do Alexandrian household. When she came of age, Paphnutius arranged a marriage with a young man of comparable standing. A visit with her father to a monastery in the neighborhood of the city, together with the words of a monastic elder, is said to have confirmed in her a resolve to abandon the betrothal and the world.

According to the vita, Euphrosyne then cut her hair, put on male dress, and presented herself at a men's monastery as a eunuch named Smaragdus (the Greek word for emerald). The abbot, concerned that the newcomer's appearance might trouble the community, placed her in a separate cell. There she lived for thirty-eight years in fasting, prayer, and seclusion. Paphnutius, devastated by her disappearance, searched for her in vain and repeatedly asked the monks for their prayers. The abbot directed him to the recluse Smaragdus for spiritual consolation. Father and daughter thus conversed on several occasions without his recognizing her, the legend explaining that years of austerity had altered her looks. The meetings are presented as a source of comfort to the grieving father and as a hidden trial and act of humility on the part of the daughter.

When she perceived that death was near, Euphrosyne disclosed her identity to Paphnutius, asked that the brethren not be told of her sex until after she had been buried, and instructed him to give the family property to the poor and to the monastery. She then died. The story continues that Paphnutius himself received the monastic habit, dwelt in her cell for some ten years, and was buried in the same grave. The account belongs to a larger family of late antique legends of women who entered male monasteries in disguise, a type well attested in Greek, Syriac, Coptic, Latin, and other Christian literatures. The existence of numerous recensions of the Life, and the absence of independent fifth-century testimony, mean that the biographical particulars cannot be historically verified; the traditional year of death, 470, is a later conventional date rather than a documented fact.

Euphrosyne is venerated as a virgin and monastic saint. The Roman Martyrology lists her on 1 January; the Eastern Orthodox Church commemorates her on 25 September. She held no episcopal or patriarchal office, did not marry, and had no children. No securely identified tomb or shrine independent of the unnamed monastery of the legend is known, and she is not the subject of a well-defined list of patronages. Her cult has been sustained by the ascetic and familial themes of the vita: the rejection of wealth and marriage, perseverance in a hidden life of holiness, and the reconciliation of parent and child at the point of death.
