Biography

Short Description

Saint Euphrosyne of Polotsk, known in the world as Predslava, was a princess of the ruling house of Polotsk, a major principality of Kievan Rus' in the territory of present-day Belarus. She was the daughter of Prince Sviatoslav Vseslavich, who bore the baptismal name George, and of Princess Sophia, and a granddaughter of Prince Vseslav Briacheslavich of Polotsk. She was born in Polotsk in the early twelfth century. No contemporary record fixes her exact year of birth, and later tradition supplies several different figures. Raised at a court that was already a centre of church life and book learning, she received an education unusual for a laywoman of her time and showed from youth a marked inclination to study and to the ascetic life. Dynastic custom would have placed her in a political marriage, but she refused that path, left the court, and received the monastic tonsure, taking the name Euphrosyne in religion.

After becoming a nun she first lived in a cell attached to the Cathedral of Holy Wisdom in Polotsk, where she devoted herself to copying books. Book production in twelfth-century Rus' was skilled and costly labour, and her work as a copyist is among the best-attested features of her life; the manuscripts were intended for liturgical use and for the instruction of others, including the poor. She later founded a women's monastery dedicated to the Saviour at Seltso near Polotsk, together with a stone church, and she also established a monastery for men. These houses made her an organizer of monastic life in her native city and a patron of learning. In 1161 she commissioned from the craftsman Lazar Bohsha a processional cross of cypress wood, covered with gold and decorated with precious stones, pearls, and cloisonné enamels, and inscribed with prayers and names. The Cross of Saint Euphrosyne became one of the principal sacred treasures of Belarus. It was still extant and carefully described in the modern period, but it disappeared in 1941 during the Second World War and has never been recovered.

Late in life Euphrosyne undertook a pilgrimage that took her to Constantinople and then to Jerusalem. In the imperial capital she was received as a princess and monastic foundress and obtained relics and a blessing for her communities. She continued to the Holy Land, then under the Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem, and visited the principal Christian sites. She died in Jerusalem and was buried at the Monastery of Saint Theodosius in the Judaean desert. The year of her death is not established with certainty in contemporary records; Orthodox tradition commemorates her on 23 May and commonly places the death in the 1160s or 1170s. Her relics were later translated to the Kiev Pechersk Lavra. In the twentieth century they were returned to Polotsk, where they are kept at the Saviour-Euphrosyne Convent, the successor of the house she founded.

Euphrosyne is venerated as a saint in the Eastern Orthodox Church and is widely regarded as the heavenly patron of Belarus and of the city of Polotsk. Her cult grew from local monastic and princely veneration rather than from a papal canonization of the Latin type; she is not recorded as having been beatified or canonized by a Bishop of Rome. She lived as a consecrated monastic, did not marry, and had no children. She held no episcopal, patriarchal, or papal office. Besides the principal feast on 23 May she is remembered in the synaxis of Belarusian saints. The chief narrative source for her life is a Slavonic vita composed in the monastic milieu of Polotsk or Kiev, which combines historical notices with conventional hagiographical themes. Independent confirmation of her activity is found in the inscriptions and later descriptions of the 1161 cross and in the continuing identity of the Polotsk foundations associated with her name. She remains one of the central medieval figures in Belarusian religious and cultural memory, associated with female monasticism, the copying of books, and pilgrimage to the Christian East.
