Biography
Eusebia Palomino Yenes was born on 15 December 1899 in Cantalpino, a small town in the province of Salamanca in western Spain, into a poor rural family. Her father, Agustín Palomino, worked as an agricultural laborer, and the household lived in material hardship. She received only a rudimentary education and from childhood had to contribute to the family's support, working as a domestic servant and caring for children. Despite these circumstances she developed a strong piety and, after contact with Salesian priests and sisters, was drawn to the spirituality of Saint John Bosco and the Salesian family.
In 1922 she entered the Institute of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians (the Salesian Sisters founded by Saint Maria Domenica Mazzarello with Don Bosco) at Salamanca. She was received as a coadjutrix sister, a vocation devoted mainly to domestic and auxiliary work rather than classroom teaching. After her novitiate she made her first religious profession in 1924 and was assigned to the community at Valverde del Camino in the province of Huelva in Andalusia, where she remained for the rest of her life. There she served in the kitchen and laundry and as portress, carrying out humble tasks with cheerfulness and the Salesian spirit of family.
At Valverde del Camino she became known for apostolic zeal among the local people, especially the poor and the young. She promoted popular Marian devotion, in particular the Association of the Devotees of Mary Help of Christians, and encouraged the Rosary and other simple practices of piety. She was remembered for humility, a spirit of sacrifice, and a reputation for holiness that drew people seeking counsel. In the early 1930s her health failed under a severe illness that caused great physical suffering, which she offered in union with Christ.
She died on 10 February 1935 at Valverde del Camino, at the age of thirty-five. Her reputation for sanctity continued after her death, and a cause for beatification was introduced. Pope John Paul II beatified her on 25 April 2004 in Saint Peter's Square in Rome. She is venerated in the Catholic Church as Blessed Eusebia Palomino Yenes, especially within the Salesian Family.
