Biography

Short Description

Eustace White was born in 1559 at Louth in Lincolnshire, in the Kingdom of England, into a family of committed Protestants. In his early twenties he embraced the Catholic faith, a conversion that produced a lasting breach with his father, who is reported to have cursed him and thereafter refused all further communication. At a time when the Elizabethan settlement treated reconciliation with Rome as a political as well as a religious offence, White chose to leave England in order to train for the priesthood. He entered the English College at Rheims in October 1584 and later continued his studies at the English College in Rome, where he was ordained priest in 1588.

The statute of 1585 against Jesuits and seminary priests made it high treason for an Englishman ordained abroad to remain in the realm. White nevertheless returned as a missionary priest and worked chiefly in the west of England, celebrating Mass and administering the sacraments in secret among recusant households. In 1591 he was seized at Blandford in Dorset. Under examination in London he was subjected to prolonged torture by the pursuivant Richard Topcliffe, who sought the names of those who had sheltered him. White refused to incriminate others. He was tried and condemned solely for his priesthood and for remaining in England contrary to the statute.

On 10 December 1591 he was hanged, drawn, and quartered at Tyburn, together with the priests Edmund Gennings and Polydore Plasden and the layman Swithun Wells, among others who suffered that day. Contemporary reports speak of his composure on the scaffold. He was beatified by Pope Pius XI on 15 December 1929 and canonized by Pope Paul VI on 25 October 1970 as one of the Forty Martyrs of England and Wales. His individual feast is kept on 10 December; he is also commemorated with the Forty Martyrs (25 October) and, in England and Wales, among the martyrs of those countries.
