Biography

Short Description

Eustache de Fly, known in English chronicles as Eustace of Flay or Eustace of Saint-Germer-de-Fly, was a Benedictine monk and abbot of the abbey of Saint-Germer-de-Fly in the Beauvaisis (present-day Oise, in Picardy, northern France) in the late twelfth and early thirteenth centuries. The monastery’s Latin name, Flaviacum, produced the vernacular forms Fly and Flay. Almost nothing is recorded of his family, birthplace, or early career; his year of birth is unknown. He enters the historical record as abbot of this long-established Benedictine house and as a preacher whose activity was noted by English annalists.

In 1200 he crossed to England and undertook a preaching tour, returning for a second mission in 1201. Contemporary writers including Roger of Howden, Ralph of Coggeshall, and Gervase of Canterbury describe the campaign. He insisted on strict Sunday rest: markets, fairs, and servile labour on Sunday were to stop, and the day was to be given to worship. He also denounced usury and called for moral reform. The preaching briefly stirred popular enthusiasm; some Sunday markets were moved to weekdays.

A distinctive tool of the mission was a so-called letter from heaven, an apocryphal text presented as of divine origin that threatened punishment for failure to keep Sunday holy. Heavenly letters of this type had circulated in earlier centuries; Eustache’s use of one is among the better-documented medieval examples. Royal and episcopal authorities in England treated parts of the campaign with suspicion, especially on the second visit. After 1201 he vanishes from English sources.

He is reported to have died in 1211, presumably in France and in connection with his abbey, though the precise place of death and burial are not given in the surviving chronicles. He was never formally beatified or canonized, and he has no established feast day or cult in the Roman Martyrology. His importance for historians lies in the evidence his missions supply for popular preaching, Sunday observance, and the pastoral use of pious forgeries around the year 1200.
