Biography

Short Description

Euthymius the Athonite, known in Georgian as Ekvtime Atoneli and also called Euthymius the Iberian, was a Georgian monk, translator, and scholar of the late tenth and early eleventh centuries. He was the son of John the Iberian, a Georgian nobleman who later became a monk and is himself venerated as a saint. As a child Euthymius was sent as a political hostage to Constantinople, a diplomatic practice that bound Georgian princely houses to the Byzantine court. In the capital he received a Greek education and became fully bilingual in Georgian and Greek, the formation on which his later literary work depended. Reliable sources give only an approximate date for his birth in the mid-tenth century; no exact year is securely attested.

After John the Iberian adopted monastic life, he lived for a time in Georgia and then among the monks of Mount Olympus in Bithynia before settling on Mount Athos. Euthymius joined his father on the Holy Mountain. With the support of the Georgian notable Tornike Eristavi (John Tornikios), a former general who had aided the Byzantine emperor against the rebel Bardas Skleros and afterward took the monastic habit, they established the Monastery of the Iberians, known as Iviron, as a Georgian house on Athos in the last decades of the tenth century. Iviron became a principal center of Georgian letters and of contact between the Georgian church and Byzantium. After his father’s death Euthymius served as hegumen of Iviron in the early eleventh century, then laid aside the abbacy in order to devote himself more fully to translation and writing.

His historical importance is above all literary. He translated a large body of Greek Christian literature into Georgian, including scriptural, liturgical, homiletic, ascetic, and hagiographical texts, and thereby helped to shape medieval ecclesiastical Georgian and to align Georgian worship and theology more closely with contemporary Byzantine practice. He also worked in the opposite direction. Modern scholarship generally credits him with translating into Greek the Georgian Christian romance known as the Balavariani, the story of Barlaam and Josaphat, a Christianized recension of the life of the Buddha that had reached Georgia through Arabic. The Greek Barlaam text associated with Euthymius circulated widely in the Orthodox world and, through later Latin versions, in Western Europe. He also composed original hymnographic and homiletic pieces.

Primary information about his life comes from the Life of John and Euthymius written in the eleventh century by George the Hagiorite, a later Georgian abbot of Iviron. According to that tradition Euthymius died in 1028 after falling from a mule while traveling, having been summoned toward Constantinople by the emperor, and was buried at Iviron. A minority of references give 1024, but 1028 is the date adopted in most modern accounts and in Georgian ecclesiastical tradition. He is venerated as a saint in the Georgian Orthodox Church and in Eastern Orthodoxy more generally, with a feast on 13 May. Together with John the Iberian and George the Hagiorite he is counted among the principal Georgian fathers of Mount Athos and as a founder of the Athonite Georgian literary school.
