Biography

Short Description

Eutropius of Orange, known in French as Saint Eutrope, was bishop of Orange (the ancient Roman city of Arausio) in Provence, in southern Gaul, during the latter part of the fifth century. He is venerated as a saint of the Catholic Church and is commemorated on 27 May. Nearly everything that can be said about him with any confidence comes from a Latin vita composed by Verus, who succeeded him as bishop of Orange, together with incidental notices in the correspondence of Sidonius Apollinaris, the Gallo-Roman aristocrat, poet, and bishop of Clermont. Later martyrologies, including the Roman Martyrology, preserve his name and feast. He is a different person from Saint Eutropius of Saintes, a separate and largely legendary figure associated with the early evangelization of western Gaul.

According to Verus, Eutropius was a native of Marseille and belonged to a family of high, even senatorial, standing. In his youth he was a pagan and lived as a man of the world within the Gallo-Roman aristocracy. He married. After his conversion to Christianity, and after the death of his wife, he distributed his property to the poor and entered the clerical state. In time he was chosen bishop of Orange, succeeding a bishop named Justus. The year of his consecration is not recorded with precision; it belongs to the middle decades of the fifth century, when Roman administration in Gaul was collapsing and the Visigoths were extending their power across the south. Orange and its church had already suffered heavily from barbarian raids and from the general disorder of the age.

As bishop, Eutropius is described as having rebuilt ruined churches, restored liturgical and communal life, practiced a marked personal austerity, and shown generous care for the poor. Southern Gaul was then a zone of contact between Nicene (Catholic) Gallo-Roman communities and the Arian Christianity of the Visigothic rulers. His episcopate is therefore remembered as one of material reconstruction and of the defense of Nicene orthodoxy. Sidonius Apollinaris numbered him among the respected bishops of his generation. Eutropius is also associated with the synod held at Arles in the 470s that dealt with the priest Lucidus and with controversies over grace and predestination in which Faustus of Riez was a leading participant.

Tradition holds that Eutropius died at Orange on 27 May 475 and that a cult formed at his tomb in the city. Verus wrote the vita both to honor his predecessor and to offer the local church a model of episcopal virtue. Beyond these outlines, many biographical particulars remain unknown: his year of birth, the name of his wife, whether he had children, the exact chronology of his ordination and consecration, and the later history of his relics are not securely documented. What survives is the portrait of a late antique bishop of Provence who, amid political fragmentation and religious division, rebuilt a damaged diocese and was remembered by his flock as a saint.
