Biography

Short Description

Evagrius Ponticus, also called Evagrius the Solitary, was a Christian monk, theologian, and spiritual writer of the late fourth century and one of the principal intellectual figures of early Egyptian desert monasticism. He was born about 345 in Ibora, a town in the Roman province of Helenopontus in northern Asia Minor. His father served as a chorepiscopus, or country bishop, and Evagrius received a thorough education in rhetoric, philosophy, and Christian doctrine. He was ordained lector by Basil the Great and deacon by Gregory of Nazianzus. When Gregory went to Constantinople to support the Nicene cause, Evagrius accompanied him and took part in the life of the church there around the time of the Council of Constantinople in 381. After Gregory left the capital, Evagrius remained and became well known in ecclesiastical and aristocratic circles.

According to Palladius of Galatia, whose Lausiac History is the chief narrative source for Evagrius's life, a dangerous attachment to a married woman of high station led Evagrius to flee Constantinople. He went to Jerusalem, where Melania the Elder and Rufinus of Aquileia received him at their monastic foundation on the Mount of Olives. After an illness which Melania treated as a summons to conversion, he adopted the monastic habit and, about 383, departed for Egypt. He lived first among the monks of Nitria and then at Kellia, the settlement of hermit cells in the desert. There he spent roughly sixteen years under the influence of Macarius of Alexandria and in the company of other leading Desert Fathers, supporting himself in part by copying manuscripts and becoming a sought-after teacher of the ascetic life.

Evagrius composed a substantial body of Greek writings that systematized desert spirituality. The Praktikos, Gnostikos, and Kephalaia Gnostika form a progressive trilogy on the practical struggle with the passions, the contemplative life, and higher knowledge of God. On Prayer, the Antirrhetikos, letters, and biblical scholia also survive, in whole or in part, in Greek, Syriac, Armenian, and other versions. He analyzed eight principal evil thoughts—gluttony, fornication, avarice, grief, anger, acedia, vainglory, and pride—which John Cassian later transmitted to the Latin West and which contributed to the later scheme of the seven deadly sins. He taught that the monk should seek apatheia, a stable freedom from disordered passion, as the threshold of pure prayer and contemplation. His speculative theology, however, was deeply Origenist: it included ideas of the pre-existence of rational intellects, a fall into bodies, and a final restoration of all rational creatures, and these views would later be judged unorthodox.

He died at Kellia in 399, at about fifty-four years of age. In 400 Theophilus of Alexandria turned against the Origenist monks of Nitria and Kellia, and in 553 the Second Council of Constantinople condemned Origenist doctrines associated with Evagrius's name. As a result he was not received as a saint in the Byzantine Orthodox or Latin churches, and many of his works circulated under other names, especially that of Nilus of Sinai. Nevertheless his ascetic teaching shaped Eastern Christian spirituality through Maximus the Confessor, the Philokalia, and Syriac authors such as Isaac of Nineveh, and it reached the West through Cassian and the later monastic tradition. In the Armenian, Syriac, and Coptic churches his writings were preserved under his own name and he has often been honored as a teacher of the desert. Precise details of any local feast day or formal canonization are not uniformly attested across the churches.
