Biography

Short Description

Saint Evasius (Italian: Sant'Evasio) is a Christian bishop and martyr whose cult is centred on Casale Monferrato in Piedmont, in north-western Italy. He is the principal patron of that city and of its diocese, and his relics are enshrined in the cathedral that bears his name. Almost nothing about him can be established from contemporary historical documents. The narratives that survive belong to later medieval hagiography and combine local tradition with legendary motifs typical of missionary-bishop passiones. He is commonly identified as an early bishop of Asti who was driven from his see and later killed for the faith in the territory where Casale Monferrato subsequently developed. The Roman Martyrology commemorates him on 1 December as bishop and martyr at Casale Monferrato in Piedmont.

According to the most widely circulated medieval passio, Evasius was a native of Benevento in southern Italy who was sent north as a missionary, in some versions by a pope of the early fourth century (sometimes named as Eusebius), and who became the first bishop of Asti. Opposition from pagans, or in other recensions from Arians, forced him to abandon that city. Accompanied by companions whose names appear in the legend—among them Proietto (Proietus), Natale, and a woman named Innocenza—he is said to have taken refuge first in the Canavese (including a stay associated with Pogno) and then in the district along the river Po. There he continued to preach Christianity among a population still largely unconverted. These details of origin, papal commission, and itinerary are not confirmed by independent early sources and are treated by modern historians as unverified.

Tradition holds that Evasius was beheaded, together with companions, and that the martyrdom took place on 1 December. One strand of the legend dates the killing to about 362, during the brief pagan restoration under the emperor Julian; other notices place him more vaguely in the third or fourth century. The place of death is identified with the later Casale Monferrato or its immediate neighbourhood on the Po. Because the written lives are late, internally inconsistent, and unsupported by fourth-century records, neither the year nor the precise circumstances of his death can be regarded as historically demonstrated. What the cult preserves is the memory of a missionary bishop who died a violent death and whose tomb became a focus of devotion in Monferrato.

The relics attributed to Evasius are kept in the cathedral of Casale Monferrato, the Duomo di Sant'Evasio, a Romanesque church whose building and consecration in the early twelfth century (often dated to 1107–1108) already presuppose an established cult. Casale was erected as an episcopal see in 1474, and Evasius remained its patron. His feast is kept on 1 December. He is also honoured in neighbouring towns of the region, some of which preserve churches or secondary relics connected with his name. No religious order, marriage, or children are documented in the tradition, which presents him as a bishop-missionary and martyr.

Because of the character of the sources, Evasius’s precise identity, the see he actually held, and the political or religious context of his death remain uncertain. He may represent an early missionary bishop whose memory was later elaborated, or the fusion of more than one local holy figure. What is historically secure is the antiquity and continuity of his cult in Monferrato and the surrounding area of Piedmont, where he has been invoked for centuries as martyr, bishop, and protector of Casale Monferrato.
