Biography

Short Description

Ève de Saint-Martin, known in English as Eve of Liège or Eve of Saint-Martin, was a Christian recluse of the thirteenth century who lived in enclosure at the collegiate church of Saint-Martin in Liège. Liège was then the seat of a powerful prince-bishopric within the Holy Roman Empire, in the region that corresponds to present-day eastern Belgium. Virtually nothing can be established from contemporary records about her parentage, the date or place of her birth, or the circumstances in which she took up the eremitical life of an anchoress. She enters the historical record principally as the friend, correspondent, and collaborator of Saint Juliana of Cornillon (also called Juliana of Liège), whose eucharistic piety and visionary experiences were decisive for the origin of the Feast of Corpus Christi.

Juliana, a nun associated with the monastery of Mont-Cornillon, reported a recurring vision of the moon in its splendour marred by a dark band, which she and her spiritual advisers interpreted as a sign that the Church lacked a dedicated feast in honour of the Body and Blood of Christ. Ève, living as an inclusa beside the canons of Saint-Martin, became one of Juliana’s most trusted supporters. The two women conferred about the proposed feast; Juliana is known to have visited Ève’s reclusorium. When opposition from within Mont-Cornillon and from local clergy forced Juliana into exile, she spent her last years in various refuges and died in 1258 at Fosses-la-Ville. Ève remained in her cell at Saint-Martin and took up the task of keeping the project alive, preserving the memory of Juliana’s revelations and urging the institution of the new solemnity.

A crucial ally proved to be Jacques Pantaléon, who had served as archdeacon in the diocese of Liège and was therefore acquainted with the local eucharistic movement. Elected pope in 1261 under the name Urban IV, he promulgated the bull Transiturus de hoc mundo on 11 August 1264, extending the Feast of Corpus Christi to the entire Latin Church. Urban sent a copy of the bull to Ève together with a personal letter in which he recalled the devotion of Liège and asked her to see that the feast was celebrated. He also transmitted a liturgical office, traditionally associated with the work of the Dominican theologian Thomas Aquinas. This papal gesture is the strongest documentary evidence of Ève’s standing and of the regard in which the former archdeacon held the recluse of Saint-Martin.

Later hagiographical tradition places Ève’s death in Liège in the middle of the 1260s, most often in 1265 or 1266, not long after she received the pope’s letter. No contemporary necrology with a precise date has been identified, and the exact day and year remain uncertain. She was associated in local memory with burial at or near the church she had served as recluse. In the Catholic Church she has been honoured as blessed (bienheureuse), especially in the diocese of Liège, yet she was never the object of a formal process of beatification or canonization of the type that became standard in later centuries. Her historical significance rests on her role as a female religious figure who helped transmit a major liturgical innovation from a local visionary circle to the papacy and the universal Church. Beyond that role, the sources allow only a cautious reconstruction: she was an anchoress of austere life, a friend of a canonized saint, and a recipient of papal correspondence, but the details of her inner experience, any possible writings, and most of her biography are lost.
