Biography

Short Description

Saint Everilda, also recorded as Everild, Everildis, and in later English usage as Averil, was a seventh-century Anglo-Saxon noblewoman who became an abbess and was afterwards venerated as a saint, chiefly in Yorkshire. Almost everything that can be said of her rests on the liturgical office preserved in the medieval York Breviary, a source of devotion rather than a contemporary biography, together with place-name evidence and later church dedications. According to that tradition she was born into a noble family in the kingdom of Wessex. She accepted Christian baptism from Saint Wilfrid, the Northumbrian bishop known for his defence of Roman ecclesiastical practice and for his part in spreading organised monastic life among the English kingdoms.

After her conversion Everilda left Wessex and travelled into Northumbria with two companions, who are named in the later sources as Bega and Wuldreda. Wilfrid is said to have granted the women land at the place afterwards known as Everingham, in what is now the East Riding of Yorkshire, then within the kingdom of Northumbria. There she established a monastery for women and governed it as abbess. The community is described as having grown to some eighty nuns, which, if the figure is even approximately historical, would have made the house a substantial foundation by seventh-century English standards. She is presented in the tradition as a consecrated virgin who remained in the monastic life until her death; no marriage or offspring is recorded.

The village name Everingham is customarily explained as the homestead of Everild, onomastic evidence that independently ties a woman of that name to the locality. Two medieval churches in Yorkshire were dedicated to her: Saint Everilda’s at Everingham itself and Saint Everilda’s at Nether Poppleton, near York. These dedications show that a regional cult existed in the later Middle Ages, even though no early full-length vita has survived. Her feast is kept on 9 July. Like most English saints of the conversion period, she was recognised by local liturgical commemoration rather than by a formal papal canonization of the kind that became usual centuries later.

No reliable record preserves the year of her birth or death, the names of her parents, or the later history of her community. She remains an obscure figure, known chiefly as one of the noblewomen who, under Wilfrid’s patronage, helped to plant female monasticism in seventh-century Northumbria. Beyond the York Breviary, the place-name, and the two church dedications, the documentary trail is extremely thin, and later hagiographical embellishments cannot be verified.
