Biography

Short Description

Saint Evermarus, also known as Evermar, is a Christian martyr of the early medieval Low Countries whose cult is centered on the village of Rutten in present-day Limburg, Belgium. Almost nothing about his life can be established from contemporary records. The principal source is a Latin vita composed in the tenth century, long after the events it describes, at or in connection with the Abbey of Sint-Truiden. According to that account, Evermarus was a man of noble family from Frisia who set out as a pilgrim. The vita places his death at the close of the seventh century or the opening of the eighth, a date conventionally given as the year 700.

The legend relates that Evermarus was traveling through the Hesbaye (Haspengouw) with a group of companions when they were set upon by robbers in a wooded place near Rutten, not far from Tongeren. The leader of the band is named Hacco. Evermarus and his fellow travelers were killed. The traditional liturgical commemoration of the martyrdom is 1 May. Because the narrative survives only in a much later hagiographical text, historians treat the details of names, numbers of companions, and precise circumstances as legendary rather than as documented fact, while accepting that a local martyr cult of considerable antiquity existed at Rutten.

Evermarus was buried at the site of his death. In the tenth century his tomb was identified or solemnly honored, and a church was built over the remains. The present parish church of Saint Evermarus at Rutten became the focus of his veneration and the resting place of relics associated with him. His name entered regional martyrologies, and 1 May remained his feast. He was never the subject of a formal papal canonization of the later medieval or modern type; his status as a saint rests on ancient popular cult and episcopal recognition typical of the early Middle Ages.

The cult of Evermarus is still visibly alive in Rutten. On the first Sunday of May the village holds the Evermarusfeesten, which include a procession and a traditional folk play, the Evermarusspel, in which local participants reenact the attack by Hacco and the death of the pilgrim and his companions. The performance is among the better-known surviving religious folk dramas of Belgium and has been maintained for many generations. Beyond this strongly localized devotion, Evermarus is little known in the wider Church, and no extensive list of patronages, writings, or historically verified biographical particulars has come down outside the tenth-century legend and the liturgical and folkloric tradition of Rutten.
