Biography

Short Description

Evermode of Ratzeburg, known also as Evermod or Evermodus, was a Premonstratensian canon regular and bishop of the twelfth century. He was born in the Low Countries, in the territory of present-day Belgium, around the opening of that century; neither the exact year nor a documented town of birth has been preserved in surviving sources. As a young man he became one of the first companions of Norbert of Xanten, founder of the Order of Canons Regular of Prémontré. He shared the early, austere life of the new community and remained among Norbert’s closest collaborators as the order spread from northern France into the Empire.

In the mid-1120s Evermode took part in Norbert’s preaching mission to Antwerp, which sought to restore Catholic life after the disturbances associated with the preacher Tanchelm. When Norbert was named Archbishop of Magdeburg in 1126, Evermode went with him to Saxony. He subsequently served as provost of Premonstratensian houses in that region, notably Gottesgnaden near Calbe on the Saale and the church of Our Lady in Magdeburg, and he helped to establish the order’s influence on the eastern borders of the German kingdom after Norbert’s death in 1134.

The bishopric of Ratzeburg, which had collapsed during earlier pagan Slavic revolts, was restored in the mid-twelfth century under Duke Henry the Lion of Saxony. Evermode was appointed the first bishop of the reconstituted see and was consecrated in 1154. He staffed the cathedral chapter with Premonstratensian canons, so that the diocese was governed according to the customs of his order. From Ratzeburg, an island town on the frontier of Holstein, he conducted a missionary episcopate among the Wendish Slavs of the western Baltic, working to convert remaining pagan communities and to rebuild ecclesiastical structures in a land only recently brought under Saxon and Christian control following the Wendish Crusade.

Evermode died at Ratzeburg on 17 February 1178 and was buried in the cathedral there. He was venerated as a saint soon afterward, particularly within the Premonstratensian order and in northern Germany, and his feast is observed on 17 February. He was followed in the see by other Premonstratensian bishops later honored as saints, including Isfrid and Ludolph of Ratzeburg. Surviving evidence for his life is modest and largely institutional; it does not support a detailed psychological portrait, but it places him securely among the first generation of Norbert’s disciples and among the missionary bishops who organized the church on the twelfth-century Baltic frontier.
