Biography

Short Description

Saint Evodius (Greek Euodios; also spelled Evodios or Euodius) was a first-century bishop of Antioch, remembered as one of the earliest overseers of that church after the apostolic age. Ancient writers do not fully agree on his exact place in the succession. Eusebius of Caesarea, in the Ecclesiastical History, names Evodius as the first bishop of Antioch. Other traditions, including the Apostolic Constitutions and later patriarchal lists, hold that the Apostle Peter organized the church there and that Evodius was ordained by Peter as his successor in the local episcopate. In either reconstruction he belongs to the first post-apostolic generation at a community the New Testament already presents as a major centre of Gentile Christianity, the place where Barnabas and Paul taught and where, according to Acts, the disciples were first called Christians. No contemporary biography survives. Parentage, place and date of birth, and any narrative of his early life are unknown; later attempts to supply them are not historically verifiable.

Later tradition, especially in the Christian East, numbered Evodius among the Seventy Disciples sent out in the Gospel of Luke. That identification is not found in the New Testament and cannot be confirmed from first-century evidence; it reflects the common hagiographical habit of attaching early bishops to the wider apostolic circle. A related and equally unverifiable legend credits him with coining the name Christians for the believers at Antioch. Acts states only that the disciples were called Christians first in that city, without naming an author of the term. Some later accounts further describe him as a pagan convert of Peter. None of these details can be controlled by early sources, and historians treat them as pious legend rather than documented fact. His Greek name was a common one and yields no biographical information.

The length and circumstances of his episcopate are likewise obscure. He was succeeded by Ignatius of Antioch, the martyr-bishop whose letters are among the principal documents of early second-century Christianity. Traditional chronologies sometimes place Evodius’s death in the later 60s of the first century and occasionally link it to the Neronian persecution; the Roman Martyrology speaks of a glorious martyrdom. Eusebius and other early narrative sources do not, however, give a precise year or an independent passion account, so both the date and the manner of death remain uncertain. No authentic writings by Evodius survive. Works later circulated under his name, or notices of treatises he was said to have composed, belong to doubtful or lost literature and cannot be used to reconstruct his teaching. His burial place is not recorded.

Evodius has been venerated as a saint from antiquity in both East and West, as part of the common memory of the apostolic sees rather than through any later formal process of canonization or beatification. In the Roman Catholic Church his feast is kept on 6 May; in the Eastern Orthodox Church he is commemorated on 7 September, often together with other figures numbered among the Seventy Apostles. He appears in traditional lists of the bishops of Antioch and, retrospectively, of its patriarchs, the see that became one of the ancient patriarchates of the Christian East. No securely attested special patronages, shrine cult, or contemporary vita have come down. The historical Evodius remains a faintly documented figure whose importance lies in his place at the head of the Antiochene episcopal line and in the honour later churches accorded to that line’s earliest names.
