Biography

Short Description

Saint Evroul (also known as Évroul, Ebrulf, Ebrulphus, or Evroult) was a Frankish hermit, monk, and abbot of the sixth century, commemorated as the founder of the monastery that later became the Abbey of Saint-Évroult in Normandy. According to the medieval tradition of that house, preserved above all by the twelfth-century historian Orderic Vitalis, who was himself a monk of Saint-Évroult, Evroul was born at Bayeux in the Bessin, in the Frankish kingdom of Neustria. He came of a noble family and spent his early adulthood as a courtier in the household of the Merovingian king Childebert I. The received vita states that he was married and that he and his wife later separated by mutual consent in order to enter the religious life. No independent sixth-century documentation of his birth, marriage, or early career survives; the outline of his life rests on later hagiography and on the origin-story of his abbey.

After leaving the court, Evroul is said first to have entered the monastery of Deux-Jumeaux near Bayeux. Seeking a stricter eremitical life, he withdrew into the forest of Ouche (the pays d'Ouche) in southern Normandy, then a wild and thinly settled region. There he lived as a hermit. Disciples gathered around him, and he organized them into a monastic community. This foundation, placed by tradition in the mid-sixth century, became the monastery later known as Saint-Évroult (Saint-Évroult-Notre-Dame-du-Bois, in the present department of Orne). Hagiographical accounts credit him with converting brigands who infested the forest, working miracles, and providing for the poor. The community followed a monastic rule of the Gallic sixth century; in later centuries the house was Benedictine and, in the eleventh and twelfth centuries, a notable centre of learning.

Evroul died at his monastery according to the received tradition on 29 December 596 and was buried there. His tomb became a focus of local veneration, and his cult was established in Normandy. His feast is kept on 29 December. Precise dates attached to his life, including a conventional birth around 517, are traditional rather than independently verified; a minority of older notices placed his death as late as 706, which is inconsistent with service at the court of Childebert I (died 558) and is not the chronology generally followed in modern reference works. Evroul was venerated from an early period by popular and episcopal cult rather than by a later papal canonization of the formal medieval type.

The historical Evroul is therefore known chiefly as the remembered founder of a Norman abbey whose later monks, especially Orderic Vitalis, shaped and transmitted his legend. The existence of an early monastic settlement in the forest of Ouche, and of a founder commemorated as Saint Evroul, remains the core of that tradition, even where individual episodes of the vita cannot be confirmed from contemporary sources.
