Biography

Short Description

Saint Eustratius of the Caves, known in Slavic forms as Evstratij Petsjerskij or Evstraty Pechersky, was an Eastern Orthodox monk and martyr of the Kiev Pechersk Lavra (the Monastery of the Caves at Kiev) in Kievan Rus' in the late eleventh century. Independent contemporary chronicles do not record his birth, parentage, or early career. The principal narrative of his life is the Kiev Caves Patericon, a monastic collection assembled in the thirteenth century from earlier tales associated with bishops Simon and Polycarp. In that tradition he had been a man of property who gave his wealth to the poor and received the monastic tonsure at the Caves. He became known there for severe fasting, a trait the later martyrdom story uses to explain how he outlived fellow captives. No reliable source gives a birth year or a birthplace more precise than the Rus' lands that supplied the monastery’s monks.

The Primary Chronicle records that on 20 July 1096 the Cuman (Polovtsian) khan Boniak raided the Kiev region and struck the Caves Monastery. Monks were killed or carried off and sold. Hagiography places Eustratius among those captives. According to the Patericon he was taken to the Byzantine city of Chersonesus (Korsun) in Crimea and sold, together with some fifty other Christians, to a merchant whom the text identifies as Jewish. The merchant is said to have pressed the prisoners to abandon Christianity. Eustratius, the story continues, urged them to refuse food that would violate Christian fasting, especially during Great Lent. The other captives are described as dying of hunger over about fourteen days; Eustratius, already trained as a faster, survived.

Orthodox synaxaria date his death to 1097, which fits captivity after the 1096 raid and martyrdom in the following spring. The Patericon states that he was crucified in a mocking imitation of Christ’s Passion, often placed on or near Holy Saturday, and that he died on the cross after foretelling punishment for his killers. Later wonders in the same text—an earthquake, the casting of his body into the sea, and imperial reprisals—belong to medieval hagiographical convention and are not corroborated by Byzantine administrative records. The narrative also carries polemical anti-Jewish motifs typical of some Christian literature of the period; they should be read as features of the source, not as independently verified fact. Historically one can say only that a monk of the Caves named Eustratius was remembered as having died a violent death in Crimean captivity in the late 1090s.

Veneration remained centred on the Kiev Pechersk Lavra. Tradition holds that relics identified as his lie in the Near Caves (the caves of Saint Anthony). The Eastern Orthodox Church commemorates him on 28 March, and again on 28 September with the synaxis of the fathers of the Near Caves (Julian calendar dates). He held no episcopal, patriarchal, or papal office. Surviving accounts present him only as a celibate monk; they mention neither a wife nor children. He did not acquire the specialised civic or occupational patronages common among later Western saints. Almost everything known about him, beyond the chronicle notice of the 1096 raid on the monastery, derives from the Patericon and the liturgical texts that grew from it.
