Biography

Short Description

Saint Exuperius, also rendered Exsuperius or in French Exupère, was Bishop of Toulouse in the early fifth century. Neither the year nor the place of his birth is recorded in surviving sources. He succeeded Saint Sylvius in the see of Toulouse; his episcopate is securely attested from about 405, when he was already known beyond Gaul. Toulouse was then a leading city of Roman Aquitania, and its bishop occupied a prominent place in the Gallic church during a period of political strain and military upheaval in the western provinces of the empire.

Exuperius is known chiefly through the testimony of Saint Jerome. Around 406 Jerome dedicated to him his commentary on the prophet Zechariah, addressing him with high praise for learning, holiness, and pastoral zeal. Jerome also records that Exuperius sent generous alms to the monastic communities of Palestine and Egypt, conveying them by the priest Sisinnius. These gifts reached Jerome at Bethlehem and the desert fathers of Egypt, showing the bishop’s concern for the wider church and for ascetic life in the East. A letter of Jerome indicates that Exuperius was still living in 411.

His reputation for charity was formed above all by his conduct after the barbarian peoples crossed the Rhine in 406 and Gaul suffered invasion, famine, and displacement. In those years Exuperius sold the sacred vessels and other treasures of his church in order to feed the poor and ransom captives. Later liturgical tradition, including the Roman Martyrology, singles out this generosity as the hallmark of his sanctity. He is remembered as a model of episcopal responsibility in public calamity rather than as a martyr or a wonder-worker.

The exact year and circumstances of his death are not firmly established; he is known only to have died after 410. He is associated with Toulouse, where a local cult developed at an early date. The Roman Martyrology commemorates him on 28 September. Churches in and around Toulouse have been dedicated to him, and he has been venerated as a saint of the Catholic Church from antiquity, long before later formal processes of beatification and canonization. No reliable ancient source records a spouse, children, or membership in a religious order; he appears in the historical record solely as a diocesan bishop of the Latin church. Beyond Jerome’s notices and the brief martyrological entries, little else can be verified, and later medieval elaborations should be treated with caution.
