Biography

Short Description

Facio of Cremona, also known as Fazio, Fazzio, or Faci, was a lay goldsmith of northern Italy later venerated as blessed in the Catholic Church. He was born in Verona in the late twelfth century; later tradition often assigns a date around 1190, but no contemporary record of an exact year of birth is known. He was trained and worked as a goldsmith in his native city. According to the hagiographical accounts that preserve his memory, he became the object of professional jealousy and was falsely accused of theft. The episode led him to leave Verona. The same tradition reports that he undertook pilgrimages, including to Rome and to Santiago de Compostela, before settling permanently in Cremona.

In Cremona, then a prosperous communal city in the Po valley, Facio resumed the goldsmith's craft and combined it with an increasingly public life of charity. In the 1220s he is credited with establishing a lay confraternity called the Congregation of the Holy Spirit (Congregazione dello Spirito Santo). The group devoted itself to the care of the sick, the poor, and pilgrims and was associated with hospital work in the city. Facio himself remained a layman. He is not recorded as having taken religious vows in a monastic or mendicant order, nor as having been ordained. His reputation in Cremona rested on personal austerity, almsgiving, and reported miracles of healing during his lifetime.

He died in Cremona on 18 January 1272. His relics came to be kept in the cathedral of Cremona, the Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta, and a local cult developed around his tomb. The Catholic Church commemorates him on 18 January. Because of his secular occupation he has been regarded as a patron of goldsmiths. Surviving knowledge of his life depends largely on later medieval and early modern hagiography rather than on a rich contemporary documentary record; details of his family circumstances, including whether he married, are not securely attested. He is commonly styled Blessed Facio of Cremona. Any formal papal recognition of his cult belongs to the later regularization of older local venerations rather than to a medieval canonization process of the type used for some other saints of the period.

Facio belongs to a wider thirteenth-century pattern of urban lay holiness in communal Italy, in which artisans and merchants were remembered for combining professional work with hospital charity and confraternity life. Cremona already honored Homobonus, a married merchant who had died in 1197 and was canonized in 1199, as a model of the Christian layman. Facio's memory, by contrast, remained more local and was transmitted under the title of blessed. The Congregation of the Holy Spirit that he is said to have founded should not be confused with the better-known Hospitaller Order of the Holy Spirit established by Guy of Montpellier in the late twelfth century, though it belonged to the same broad movement of hospital confraternities dedicated to the Holy Spirit.
