Biography

Short Description

Saint Fagan (Welsh Ffagan; Latin Faganus or Fugatius; also found as Phagan) is a legendary missionary and bishop of early British Christianity. Medieval tradition presents him as one of two clerics—together with Saint Deruvian, also called Dyfan—sent from Rome by Pope Eleutherius in the second century after a British ruler named King Lucius asked to be received into the Church. The motif of Lucius’s letter is older than Fagan’s own name. It appears in the Liber Pontificalis, a collection of papal biographies assembled in the sixth century, and was repeated by Bede in the Ecclesiastical History of the English People. Those early witnesses do not identify the men supposedly dispatched to Britain. Fagan and Deruvian enter the story only in the twelfth century, above all in the Book of Llandaff and in Geoffrey of Monmouth’s Historia Regum Britanniae.

In that later cycle of texts the pair are said to have baptized Lucius and to have organized Christian life in south-east Wales. They were credited with founding or restoring the church of Llandaff and with planting other churches in the surrounding countryside. One foundation was associated with the settlement west of Cardiff that still bears the saint’s name, St Fagans (Sain Ffagan). Subsequent writers sometimes enlarged the mission with extra companions or a more detailed itinerary, but these elaborations belong to the same medieval legendary corpus rather than to any contemporary record. The Lucius story itself was useful to Welsh and Anglo-Norman churchmen who wished to claim that British Christianity predated Augustine of Canterbury and possessed a direct Roman pedigree.

No second-century source from Britain or from Rome corroborates Fagan’s existence, and no trustworthy dates of birth, death, or consecration survive. Modern historians treat King Lucius, the letter to Eleutherius, and the mission of Fagan and Deruvian as pious legend. Suggested origins for the Lucius tale include confusion with Abgar of Edessa (sometimes styled Lucius), an interpolation in the papal lists, or a deliberate medieval construction in the interest of Llandaff. Fagan’s cult remained local. He is remembered as namesake and traditional patron of St Fagans near Cardiff; he was not the object of a later papal canonization, and major martyrologies do not assign him a universally received feast. His memory is preserved in place-names, in the medieval literature of Llandaff, and in the legendary history of the conversion of Britain rather than in a recoverable biography.
