Biography

Short Description

Fausta of Cyzicus is a Christian virgin martyr of the late third or early fourth century, associated with the city of Cyzicus on the southern shore of the Propontis (the Sea of Marmara) in the Roman province of Asia, in what is now northwestern Turkey. Almost nothing about her can be established from contemporary historical documents; the surviving accounts belong to later hagiographical tradition rather than to trial records or other first-hand sources. According to that tradition she was a young Christian girl, often described as about thirteen years of age, who suffered during the persecutions connected with the co-emperor Maximian (Augustus from 286) and with the wider Great Persecution that began in 303. She is commemorated as a virgin, and there is no evidence that she belonged to a religious order, was married, or had children.

The legend relates that Fausta was arrested for her faith and brought before a local official named Evilasius (also spelled Evilasios or Evelasius). He subjected her to a series of tortures meant to force her to renounce Christianity: she was stripped, beaten, had her hair shorn, was suspended, and had her limbs broken or crushed, and she was threatened with fire and with boiling liquids. The hagiographers describe miraculous preservation—instruments failing, fires going out, and cauldrons of boiling pitch or oil becoming harmless. Struck by her endurance and by these wonders, Evilasius himself converted to Christianity. A further official, Maximus, is then said to have been sent to complete the punishment of both Fausta and the newly converted Evilasius. In some recensions Maximus likewise witnessed miracles, such as boiling oil turning cool at the sign of the cross, and was himself converted. The three were put to death together. The manner of execution varies among the sources: beheading is commonly mentioned; other versions speak of additional torments, including Fausta being sawn asunder.

Liturgical memory of the group is ancient but not uniform. The Roman Martyrology commemorates Fausta, a virgin, and Evilasius at Cyzicus in the Hellespont on 20 September, placing their passion under Maximian. Byzantine synaxaria commemorate Fausta together with Evilasius and Maximus on 6 February, dating the martyrdom to the years of Maximian’s rule in the early fourth century (often given as the span 305–311). No reliable evidence survives for her parentage, an exact year of birth or death, or her place of burial. Formal papal canonization in the later medieval or modern sense did not apply to such early martyrs; her cult is of the ancient, pre-congregational type, attested in martyrologies and calendars of both East and West. She has not been widely assigned specific patronages in later Catholic or Orthodox devotion.

Modern historians treat the Acts of Fausta as legendary rather than as a documentary record of a particular trial. The conversion of the persecutors, the catalogue of failed tortures, and the youthful virgin heroine belong to a well-known pattern in late antique martyr literature. Nonetheless, the persistence of her feast in both the Roman Martyrology and the Orthodox synaxarion shows that a cult of a virgin martyr named Fausta at Cyzicus was established by the early medieval period. Beyond that liturgical memory, the historical individual, if she existed as a distinct person, remains obscure.
